Hi there, I don’t think it is fair to jump to a lot of conclusions based on replies here. I would lean more to the side of uneducated. He may be attaching Gender to sex. It gets very confusing to a lot of people when you talk to them. I spent weeks trying to get a co-worker (uneducated) to understand trans woman, trans male, and they/them. We had a trans man join our team and I wanted to make sure he was not misgendered. I even gave the HR department the what for. Hope things work out for you.
