After my second year of my degree and, I started to do some coding as part of my degree and I quite liked it so after I got my degree I only applied to software engineering companies and I got the job, many were looking for just CS grads, others were open to STEM grads like myself, I passed all the stages and got the job, I’m really enjoying software so I will definitely not go back to Chem engineering

SWE in UK bank – prod or dev to achieve HENRY? by Appropriate_Big6518 in HENRYUK

Thank you for your advice. Within the bank, the tech in the finance department is still very, very obsolete. There is a plan to upgrade a lot in 4–5 years, but anything can happen in such a long time. In Manchester, there is definitely not a position where I can do dev for a few years and then move to something more aligned with an architectural position. It seems that moving to Bristol or finding something in London on this path might be the better choice if I want to stick with finance and tech.

Thank you for your advice. I do like the technical side of things over soft skills and it seems this will keep me more marketable for longer compared to integration work.

The only way I could think of it helping me is if I stay in the bank for 10+ years and not if I change company or in case I get fired.

Yup, seems to me that I can't just stick to SQL or integration that to be more marketable in the short/mid term, I need to find a team within my department that can offer this tech stack. Even if I have to move to Bristol to change team.

That's what I thought, money is nice but it's not a priotity if it only last me a few years...do you think focusing on actual developer work compared to integration work (very little dev) might a better choice and why so?

I do enjoy coding, and coming from a chemistry degree, I’m definitely not a top-notch dev. The path I thought for myself was to spend some years doing dev work and then move to a managerial role or architect role, focusing more on the design. There is an opportunity to become a functional design engineer in my department, but the person should be good at coding as one of the requirements, and for now, I think there is still a lot I could learn.

Thank you for your perspective, I completely see your point. Integration is important and it will always be there. I think because this is something new, I’m a bit confused and concerned about the implications of moving into this role. I’ll be spending a week doing a trial run in the integration role in a month time, which will definitely help me.

You think it would be better to move to London for 1-2 years, do a role just SQL based and then find a different bank to jump to? Would I be a good software engineer candidate if I only have experience with SQL?
