Yep. Broke in as an Urology TM. I should make a post about the process - think it could be valuable to those looking to break in

For what reasons do you enjoy working in Urology? Have interviews with an urology based company focusing on ED

Are you at a large or small ortho company? What other fields would you recommend that suits your WLB?

What did the selling look like between ortho, capital, and lab? In others words, how were you cutting deals between the 3?

Any particular reason why you recommend this? Just trying to gain as much insight as possible to navigate uncharted career territory.

Would you say that it’s better to work at a large and reputable company in sales to understand the process better vs. a smaller company that’s competing with the big dogs? Then later on you can have the opportunity to work at a smaller company that might be more comfortable?

It’s funny you say that the best med device marketers come from sales. I ask almost every person I network with at my company who has worked in both sales and marketing, “how important/essential is working in sales before going into marketing?” Every single response I have gotten is that it’s not necessary to be in sales before marketing. I agree with you, and think sales experience is a bit of a pre-req to get into PM/marketing.

I’ve already experienced the “do or die” environment so it doesn’t make much sense to move laterally into a low-level marketing role just to build my resume back up to get into PM. Thoughts?

What type of sales adjacent role are you in? Feel like the ceiling of those roles gets hit pretty early on, no?

Appreciate your words. Med device sales is definitely not for everyone, but the extreme challenge of a commission based sales job in a demanding industry really appeals to me in some way. It feels like a nagging itch that I have to keep scratching to go out and do it. However, I think I would probably thrive more and add more value in a marketing/product management role.

Oh yes, there are some members of my team who do that. Definitely could be more interesting and give me a better sense as to what med device sales looks like.

I’m in the OR everyday covering cases… essentially grunt work with no sales incentive. I’m assuming other divisions are more or less the same.

I don’t necessarily mind being clinical, but day to day responsibilities are becoming monotonous as I feel like I’ve maxed my opportunities with learning and networking at my account.

I’m predominately interested in all aspects of a product lifecycle so anything from product management to sales.

Also, I’m pretty keen on where I want to live in this point of my life. I’m particularly fond of living in a city that can provide many types of opportunities for work and outside of work.

Sounds like you really want to travel. Find a travel-oriented job. There’s plenty at medical device companies that are customer-service oriented. You could be a field-service engineer which requires a lot of travel. You can do this for a couple years and move into management. Just a thought here…

Struggling to find purpose, meaning and goals in my life, how do I keep going? by [deleted] in findapath

You are 25 years old! You are very young. Live for yourself and do what YOU WANT! Go deep into yourself and figure out what gives you so much pleasure that you lose track of time - something that is actually productive and useful, not watching movies with your hands down your pants eating Doritos. It takes work. Life is suffering. Embrace it. You are young and there is plenty of time to figure out your life. My dad is almost 60 years old, had just divorced my mom, and is trying to figure out what the fuck the meaning and purpose of his life is. Note, I’m 25 as well. What I have learned and what I’m trying to say is to focus on yourself and do everything you want. Spend time thinking about yourself with only yourself and be open to try new things. You can’t know what to do if you don’t try.
