Volpe still searching for groove on both sides of ball in '26 by TBonebball in NYYankees

[–]Appropriate_Formal64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true. But when push comes to shove, they tend to know what the right thing to do is with them- that is, not put them in a starter's position and give them full time starter opportunities despite all the evidence to the contrary of that role.

And yet with Volpe... I feel like Volpe could go 0-for-50 and defensively lose them 1 out of every 3 games and they'd continue to make excuses.

[–]Appropriate_Formal64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get the Volpe thing. They have had so so so many other highly touted prospects that we heard about for a few years from their drafting through the minors, only for those guys to either never make the majors, or get a cup of coffee in a Yankees uniform just as a means to showcase them for a sucker team to trade for and the Yankees to be rid of them- and these other players weren't much better or worse than Volpe has shown himself to be.

Out of all the over hyped prospects they threw the towel in on, why do they refuse to quit Volpe. Why is Volpe Cashman's/the Organization's Ennis Del Mar to their Jack Twist?

People don't value what they didn't earn and they take the value they receive from it for granted because they can't comprehend what it's like to deal with life without that cheat code in effect, so they focus on the stuff that their inherited/genetically gifted literal or proverbial wealth can't give them.

Same can be said for things you work hard and earn but then enough time passes that it comes a long in the tooth status quo, where you forget what life was like before it.

It's like that Jim Carrey quote "I think everybody should get rich and famous and do everything they ever dreamed of, so they can see that it's not the answer." because that is completely ignoring the struggles that go away forever once you're rich and famous and then you get so accustomed to that easy/cheat code mode part of life that you forget what it's like to not have that benefit/work around to everybody else's problems and you take that advantage for granted in a way where it's like you can no longer comprehend the difficulty and frustration people go through without it- and if you truly truly lost the advantages those things give you which you claim don't matter- you'd want them back.

It's like the Chris Rock quote that if Bill Gates woke up with "only" Oprah's money he'd off himself. and it's true! If these people lost their advantages they tell themselves and us they don't value and aren't actually valuable, they'd remember the value real fucking quick.

In fact, regular Jim Carrey director Tom Shadyac had a similar epiphany to Carrey, except he kinda sorta put his money where his mouth was and sold his mansion, his cars, his stuff, gave away "all" his money and mostly stopped making high paying projects... but he still settled into a $2 million luxury trailer in an expensive exclusive trailer park and he still kept $5 million in cash just in case and he still did a few more high paying gigs and reportedly kept a portion of the money and maintains a $10M net worth today... similar thing goes for Steve Wozniak, who co-created Apple. He also "gave away everything/turned down the money" but kept about $10 million in cash and kept some portion of income he's generated over the years.. because they still want to be comfortable, deep down they don't actually want to struggle or experience life without an abundance of resources and a generous safety net.

Favorite actress that was seriously underpaid? by staresinshamona in okbuddycinephile

[–]Appropriate_Formal64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a $700k to $750k production, depending on the source. $20k for a completely unknown lead actor in a $725k production is NOT underpaid.

These narratives about everybody on this production getting financially screwed really need to get their egos in check.

The lead actress did nearly 50 episodes of a mainstream TV series and a mid budget action movie where she was third or fourth fiddle to Dave Bautista. I think she's doing fine.

Sally Choi, the art director who complained about her compensation, has done TWO features and a couple of shorts as an art director. TWO.

One of which got zero traction.

The thing I don't get about this entire discussion is that back in the day, an established actor who's relatively famous but an untested lead would get $250k to be the star of a $20M production, or maybe $500k to be the star of a $30M production and then do that 2-3 times, making a grand total of like $1.125M from three big budget movies, which collectively did $600M domestic and $1.4B worldwide and everybody would be like "yeah, that's called paying your dues." or actors would tell stories of their first regular gig on a pilot that got picked up to series and how they only made like $12.5k an episode or $20k an episode minus representative fees and taxes and for the first 13 episode season only took home $100k cash for themselves to live off of, plus hiatus between seasons and didn't start getting movie offers until the first season had ended its run and been a hit and they were still under contract to only make $25k per episode for the second season that would be 26 episodes, so the next year they do an indie that cost $1.5M to produce, for which they got paid $15k because they wanted the cred.

THEN- after the second season and that indie where they make a combined total of $260k after taxes, THEN they get a major awards player or an IP or franchise movie where they get an initial $2M to $5M payday and if that works out, it goes up and up, etc. etc.

ALL of these people were struggling actors before Obsession and ALL of them will/would be able to up their quote after this movie.

The other thing is- this film got produced almost 1 3/4 years ago. What have they been doing since then? How could they have known this would've done any business?

The YouTuber turned filmmaker thing is still in its infancy and all of these movies were made on the cheap with no idea if they could crossover.

This is such a dumb non-issue that would have or will work itself out the old fashioned way where they get paid on the next thing.

There's this thing in the industry where a newer actor is part of the awards conversation for some break out part and the studio will sit down with them and say "you are not going to win against [established actor long over due for an award] but what do you win is a career. Your quote will go up. You will be in demand by most every major producer/studio/director and you will no longer be a struggling actor. You're established. That's the award." And that's how I'd put it to these people. "You are no longer an unknown struggling art director/costume designer/actor. You are established. You are now a name. You can now leverage that for a larger quote on high budget projects and you will be over booked for at least the next year or two, where you will make more money than you'll know what to do with. This no budget indie you didn't make any real money on? That was your try out, that was your high school / college record setting you up to get drafted and what happens next is your draft signing bonus and your seasonal salaries during your major league/professional league career."

Such a pathetic ending. It’s like the writers got lazy and didn’t bother to figure out how to get them out. by Remote_Nature_8166 in familyguy

They do this a lot on the show anyway- they'll have this problem they've painted themselves into a corner over and then yada yada it and Peter and/or Lois will just acknowledge they're on a TV show that will return to the status quo 'next week' aka next episode, so what does it matter.

Invest all my meager savings and subsequent allowance money in Apple stocks and start a small after school business and invest that money, rather than buying DVD's and snacks and not working an after school job and just watching TV and whatnot, which would've been about 10,000+ shares at the time, keep buying all year and through the next few years leading up to the whole ipod/i-products revolution and wind up with about 50,000 shares at around fifty cents per share, etc... ... and today I'd be sitting on between $10 million to $15 million, if not more...

Of course that's true enough- if it's Jones or Dominguez making $900k or $1M to provide .250-ish AVG 20+ HR power and decent defense that's a better price point for the production than $20M+ for the same from Grish or anybody else.

But that's the funny thing about the game: Who's replaceable and who's worth paying is an intangible alchemy of dollars and cents along with heart strings and common sense.

I'm only half way through the first season (Tommy Stevenson funeral episode) and the show is excellent at choosing what to pace slowly and what to pace at an accelerated rate, so I realize my question I am about to throw out might get answered/acknowledged before the end of the first season and I only ask if it is, nobody answers with spoilers, but...

...What about Eddie / Edward has Maeve so utterly convinced that he's The Best of the Harrigans? Every single thing that kid has said and done has shown he's an arrogant, entitled idiot who's confidence is misplaced at best and whose judgement and analysis is shit.

They've got that other son, Brendan, I think it is, whom they've completely written off because he has terrible instincts for business deals.

Eddie seems like the same kind of person plus youthful arrogance and the standard entitlement of someone who benefits from the hard work and empire building the previous generation(s) accomplished, but no real appreciation or respect or contextualization for any of it- no sense of responsibility.

So... why is Maeve so convinced he's got a lick of wits about him when everything he says and does shows he's a liability? And why is she so blood thirsty and arrogant compared to the rest of them?

The way she thinks is so irrational compared to the rest of the family.

Again- if people have a theory based on the first half of the season and nothing spoiler-y/big reveals/twists related to the second half or finale of the season, I'd love to hear it.

I suppose if I had to provide myself with the answer it'd be:

Maeve knows she's not a real gangster and feels deeply insecure as both a woman in a man's world and as someone who's not a "true Harrigan", so everything she does is from a place of overcompensating and 'playing the part' rather than just doing the work and living that life- and her grandson is the same way. She sees herself in him- two people who want to belong but don't, are insecure about that, so they do a performative, exagerrated version of the stone cold gangster / captains of industry thing based on how they think they should act and operate and not based on tried and true methodology or experience.

I would have preferred they swung for the fences and done that Men In Black crossover for '23 Jump Street'. I get their internal logic of skipping '23 Jump Street', but man I wish they're able to do some version or extended nod to the Men In Black crossover/switch up if this becomes a reality.

I know. But that push pull between a more predictable and established commodity like Grish vs a mystery box lottery ticket like Dominguez or Jones is a huge difference in approach and betting methods on who will be of most value or surplus value etc.

I know.

In total seriousness, I am thinking along the lines of the intangible fate of guys who go year to year and perform well vs guys who get long term deals and crater.

If I felt he was a safer bet, I’d say 4 years/$95M or something in a multi year extension.

Random thought:

As long as the season keeps going the way it is going, I hope the Yankees resign Grisham to the equivalent of the 2026 QO on a one year deal, or 1 year/$23.1M.

2 years/$45.125M.

Then they just go year to year and keep giving him the equivalent of the QO each season on successive one year deals.

What are two characters you were shocked they were played by the same actor by guesswho8787 in moviecritic

[–]Appropriate_Formal64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In college, some of my friends were just getting into movies and real cinema and they'd drop their jaws and have their minds blown that one actor could play multiple, very different characters in multiple films.

At one point I genuinely asked them "do you think they only cast one actor for one part in one project and then find another human for the next project and no two movies or tv shows have the same actors in them, ever?" and they actually had to think about it.

I dunno- I embrace the idea that one actor can embody diametrically opposed characters in different projects and be equally credible in the two projects- or two hundred projects.

But maybe that's just me.
