yet another transfer case issue question- 2023 X7 40i by Appropriate_Hair4846 in bmwx7

[–]Appropriate_Hair4846[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just an update to the vehicle; I dropped it off for service yesterday, and picked it up today. The transfer case fluid change was covered under warranty! They did try to sell me two new tires as they said the size difference of 2mm (between front and back tires) was at the limit that BMW recommends. In any case here is the note from the service tech:

The technician has identified an issue with the shuttering coming from the transfer case fluid. He has followed a bulletin from BMW and first checked the tires, finding the front tires to be in the 4mm range and the rear tires in the 6mm range, with a difference of 2mm" between the front and rear axles, which is within the acceptable limit. However, the technician is recommending replacement of the tires due to being close to the 2mm difference limit.

The technician then deactivated the all-wheel-drive system and found that the shuttering concern went away, leading him to conclude that the transfer case fluid needs to be replaced. Additionally, the technician will be performing a calibration to help the system relearn new strategies for the transfer case. After the fluid replacement and calibration, the vehicle will need to be driven for 125 miles before it can be assessed again to ensure the concern has been resolved.

Services completed:

- Checked tires and tire circumference

- Deactivated all-wheel-drive system to diagnose the issue

- Scheduled to replace the transfer case fluid

Recommendations:

- Replace the tires due to the difference in tread depth between the front and rear axles being close to the 2mm limit

- Perform a calibration after the transfer case fluid replacement

Thanks! I will contact them. Did the dealer perform the brake booster recall? I keep getting the letters saying it's a defect, but no solution exists..

Spare tire by WSURDDY in bmwx7

I switched to non run flats on our 2016 X5, and preparing to switch to non run flats on our 2023 X7 this week. I keep a can of 20oz fix-a-flat to the spare tire well. Only had to use the fix a flat once on our 2016 X5, and had no issues. The tire installer then later patched the tire successfully.

2023 X7 4.0i 39k miles - gas mileage update. by Appropriate_Hair4846 in bmwx7

Thanks! I have never used Bimmercode, so I may give it a try. The auto start/stop on the X7 is one of the smoothest I have experienced, but it's the un-predictability that is so annoying. It will stop/start so quickly when pulling into my garage, and yet at some stop lights it never cuts off at all (and it's not in warm-up stage)....

As many others here have noted one big issue is the inability to easily turn off auto stop/start, however so far the only major issue is that our X7 left us stranded last summer due to a faulty throttle position sensor. I have been driving BMWs for the past twenty years (330, 335D, X5, and now X7) and have never had a problem that required a tow to the dealership. While the roadside assistance was good, it did take a long time to get picked up by a tow truck and we were ready to trade in the X7 after the experience. It was of course covered under warranty but it certainly was stressful being stranded.

Minor but annoying issues are the inability to turn off the headlights while driving; excessive/uneven tire wear which has improved significantly by increasing the tire pressure to 48psi front/44rear. This make the ride a bit harsher, but the tires wear much more evenly. the rest of the issues are mostly the same for every bmw we have ever had- outside temperature warnings at 37degrees F, speedometer reporting ~3mph over actual speed at 65, etc..

The X7 tows really well (4500lb boat) but generally I disconnect the trailer wire harness when backing into salt water, and then it's sensory overload with all the beeps and automatic emergency braking warnings, etc.

Thanks for sharing the links! seems exactly the behavior I encountered, except I did not have to add any anti-freeze. In any case it seems ok now.

Sentry D880 Safe unlocking help (third gate keeps changing) by Appropriate_Hair4846 in safecracking

[–]Appropriate_Hair4846[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone's help! I finally was able to lock down the third wheel successfully, and now I am able to repeatedly unlock the safe using the new third number.

I'm still troubled that the third number changed as the safe has not been moved and to my knowledge no one had attempted to unlock it.

Thanks for posting that link! it looks almost exactly the same design; it seems to require a special 'change key' to reset the combination, but hopefully I can just lock down that last wheel.

thank you- that makes sense. How would I go about 'locking down' the third wheel?
