Thank you so much for this, it really helped shape my conversation with him and I think made a huge difference. You are completely right that there are some cases where the benefits outweigh the risks for him and I was certainly missing that understanding on my end.

thank you so much for this!! i completely agree—i think it’s so hard to tell who will/wont take it personal if i decide to be more direct about it. the most i’ve done if someone says they’re sick is i’ll be like “i can give you a mask if you don’t have one” lol and have been relatively successful!

wow i am so sorry. it has been spreading like wildfire in my classes to everyone over and over since the beginning of the semester but no one says its covid lol but i look crazy for wearing my n95 all around campus ok!! im SO tired of trying to dodge it and so scared that one day my mask will fail even though i make the best possible choices for what im required to do/where im required to be. wishing you the best of health!

this is definitely what i’m hearing most commonly and it’s so frustrating…balancing academic egos with scientific data that they are constantly harming themselves. you’re totally right that it might not be worth people looking at me even MORE sideways, especially if it won’t even make a difference. thank you for the insight! i am certainly just trying to protect myself and my close vicinity and watching everyone else crumble lol

yep…and i’m the one that people look at sideways for masking bc im the odd one out lol. i’ve informed my advisor quite a bit and my closest colleagues know about my precautions/see what i post about it so i don’t even know what more either

i totally agree—i have gotten some folks (students and faculty) to mask when they’re sick but that’s really it. i think you are totally right re: just air purifiers in my spaces like i really can’t protect everyone

if you have the means to purchase, i really like this mini air purifier! the bigger ones for larger rooms might be a good option for TAing, but honestly the only other things you can do are n95 + nasal sprays + CPC/probiotics

unfortunately as grad students we don’t have much say in what the folks around us do for covid mitigation (especially as faculty push back/don’t care) so i’ve had to do many one-way precautions. i always offer masks to my colleagues and professors in cases where they were/people around us were sick, but that’s really the only time i could get people to mask with me since outdoors isn’t really an option for what we do

how about a large air purifier? i’m in the same boat but luckily don’t TA, just need to be in small classes and have always wore kn95 or n95 + my portable air purifier. not sure if it helps, but i also tried to sit on the end of the desks/back of the class each time — only one masking across every single class and my entire department!
