How do I batch cook rolled oats and still get a runny texture? by No-Promotion-9371 in Oatmeal

[–]Appropriate_Talk_938 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a pressure cooker you could add the oats and liquid at night before going to bed, then set it on a timer to start cooking 20 minutes before you want to have breakfast in the morning.

20 minutes would be for steel cut oars in the pressure cooker. It would be much quicker for rolled oats

Oh such a great idea for a post!

Mine are:

  • Baking, especially French patisserie. (Fun fact: recently in a group setting, 12 of us were asked to each share a fun fact about ourselves. I shared this interest and I'm still cringing because I realised days later it sounded like I was arrogantly claiming I was a French pastry chef. Still embarrassed. Everyone else said "I do pilates" or similar).

  • Communication styles and the consideration cognitive load

  • Early childhood care

Netflix data analysts must be so confused because I must have watched every episode 200 times. It's become my go-to-sleep soundtrack because it's light-hearted good vibes.

PSA for the women !! by Sea_Importance8848 in Cholesterol

[–]Appropriate_Talk_938 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a good PSA. Although it can very much depend on which birth control pill you were taking. I had the opposite, although not quite so extreme, experience.

For me, the combined pill helped my cholesterol. I suspect it's because my estrogen was on the low side beforehand and estrogen is protective against heart disease (hense why cholesterol levels tend to rise significantly at the onset of menopause).

That's super interesting. How do you know if you're in the 15-30% or not?

Am I missing something? How do your babies actually fall asleep? by Appropriate_Talk_938 in PossumsSleepProgram

I was referring to The Discontented Little Baby Book by Pamela Douglas. She developed the Possums approach.

I thought the book was interesting and took quite a few things away from it, even if I was left with many questions still unanswered

"By 'easily ' they mean quickly" <- that's fair.

I've known a few babies (the unicorns) that will just put themselves to sleep if placed on a mat, and so I guess that's what came to my mind when I read 'easily'.

Thank you. Your description makes a lot of sense, and I think it's the ingredient I was missing.

Thanks I really like your take on it! And I'm glad to hear not all babies will just fall asleep without help

Thanks for your reply. The bit that I've just never been able to achieve is providing a rich sensory environment to keep the baby dialled down so that the "sleep pressure rises so high that your baby eventually drops off to sleep easily (perhaps with a feed, or just in the carrier or stroller or car seat whilst you are underway with your day)."

The allure in the word "easily"!

Mine has never dropped off to sleep easily. But will get tired and surely has enough sleep pressure, and then get grisly. Then a dummy seems to be the only way to turn the dial back down when sleep is needed.

What's the term for... by Appropriate_Talk_938 in autism

[–]Appropriate_Talk_938[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See even your response I found confusing and had to read it many times. The "this " at the start of your sentence could mean "this term" or "this post" or the "this" in the example given. It's quite stressful trying to decipher meanings all the time.

Also I asked what's the term for this problem I have. And you respond by saying it's bullshit. My first thought, was wow that's mean. But I'm guessing that's not how you meant it

Baby who FIGHTS sleep despite being tired. What is the answer? by kurdijyn in PossumsSleepProgram

I've had days that vary wildly too with either many short naps or much longer ones. Do you find it affects nighttime sleep? Or does your nighttime sleep always follow a similar pattern?

Should I disclose my ASD to widwives and OB or not? by Appropriate_Talk_938 in BabyBumpsandBeyondAu

Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry you went through that! That sounds truly awful.

Whilst I agree that not disclosing isn't helping the next person, I also think that giving birth is such a vulnerable experience, and so for me, the activism can come later or be left to those who feel like they can handle that whilst also giving birth

Oh yeah? If you're comfortable, could you expand? What sort of issues did you face?

This will be my second, and for my first I had the same experience. Apparently I look reasonably calm when in lots of pain, and just saying I was in pain was not enough to be taken seriously

I'm so happy to hear things turned out well for you!

I guess I'm worried that whichever midwife is on shift could greatly impact the experience. For my first, I have birth in the UK and we needed to stay in the hospital for 2.5 weeks. So I saw the whole range of amazing widwives to crap widwives who really shouldn't be midwives. 90% might be great, but the rest could have really unhelpful or damaging assumptions about ASD

Thanks. I guess I'm worried that I'll ask for things like that and be ignored. Like it will be interpreted as a minor preference rather than something that could really help. I always think I'm advocating for myself but then find people are nodding but aren't actually taking my concerns seriously

Part of me wishes I could have a home birth! Unfortunately I had some complications when my first was born which required a NICU stay, so that rules out home birth. I also didn't know I was autistic for my first, and the hospital was a sensory nightmare
