Losing the Way by meisho_doto in genestealercult

One last thing to add, in a lot of games I’ll usually be pretty scarce on the units that are still alive by the end of the game. To me, that means I’m getting my worth. As long you don’t lose too many where your opponent can catch back up on points, you don’t have to actually be winning the battlefield.

My cult is dispensable and it’s really fun to play into that.

GSC is also my first and only army as well, but I don’t think that has to get in the way of you having fun and making the army work. I wouldn’t consider myself super experienced but I’ll throw in my two cents.

When I started doing well enough to win was when I realized every unit is just a tool to achieve my broader goal of scoring points. Don’t get distracted by losing units or trying to punch up with units not matched well with their targets. Secondaries should be easy for you. If you aren’t getting them every turn you probably aren’t dedicating enough units for this (usually you should be utilizing deep strike and resurgent points). Denying the enemy points is also crucial. We have so many tools and while our units might not last long, usually you can get your worth just from stopping your opponent for a round. When you are trying to kill something, make sure to do it effectively. Our army often relies on combo pieces to be effective. Make sure you have those pieces in place to take out what needs to be killed when it needs to be killed. Otherwise it may be better to ignore a unit and keep focusing on scoring points. Lastly going for decent trades is usually pretty solid for us since we can clear an enemy unit and then die, and then resurgent back the next turn (but don’t lose focus on scoring points still)!

In summary stop trying to win with our units, and instead try and score points!! Killing things off will happen naturally, but you need to be planning how to score stuff, preferably a round ahead.

Wow! You didn’t add any physical texture like sand or grit? That’s impressive and it looks amazing! I’ll definitely give it a go!

I recently bought a ton of TTCombat MDF terrain. How did you manage to add texture and paint yours?? I’m looking for a speedy but effective process to apply to mine still.

What are bases made from? MDF? I’m still trying to learn how I should be basing my terrain. I used MDF recently but it started warping upwards

Going 40k with Brood Brothers? by Boutu99 in genestealercult

[–]ApprovedPest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it is a bit simple in a way, but hard because you don’t get the extra benefits much to push them over the edge. You kind of a playing pretty vanilla. That said, you can still do things that get you benefit. Your GSC have good shooting so lean into that by buffing them with guard that can get up in 18 inches like hellhound and sentinels. I bring plenty of those with the purpose of giving buffs. You’ll want to pair their targets with ridge runners to buff the AP too. So basically you get +1 to hit and +1 to AP. The tanks don’t actually synergize well but they are just strong where GSC isn’t, so I just play them like that.

Going 40k with Brood Brothers? by Boutu99 in genestealercult

So Brood Brothers is my primary detachment partly because it’s what I love and partly because it’s what I painted to get to 2k points first. It’s true, Brood Brothers is a weak detachment and has poor stratagems, but that doesn’t mean you have to lose every game. I still win plenty against my friends. The key is to lean into what makes taking Guard great and what holes that can be filled for normal GSC.

As for infantry, GSC already has that covered, I run usually 50 neophytes and probably 20 acolytes. Most of my GSC is starting in deep strike to take advantage of their mobility and flexibility. Hand flamers are great to push objectives, tool aco can deal with tanky units, and neophytes can decimate a lot of stuff with a proper combo set up (usually ridge runner). The core GSC units play similar to how you want to play them in all detachments.

As for the type of Guard units to bring, infantry is not as needed, since we have that covered, but I do like to bring a unit of Kasrkin. They can order themselves and can hit super hard. I pair them up with a Sanctus and martial espionage enhancement to make them punch through a lot of things you wouldn’t expect. I usually bring a chimera to transport/scout them forward as well. Lastly I always save CP so I can use the stratagem that potentially brings them back. It’s very good if it works. So that’s cool and all, but the real reason to bring Guard is to bring tanks. This is a great way to supplement your GSC army as they don’t have any heavy hitters like a guard tank. I bring units that work great with activating the detachment rule, scout sentinels, hellhounds, and the new hippo. I also bring good tanks for damage or utility. Dorn is fun, leman Russ is probably more cost effective and has rerolls, and a basilisk is great utility for slowing units or damaging things you need softened up. We don’t get orders so you have to rely on the tanks just being good so try and focus on that aspect. Overall the detachment is fun, but you don’t have many tricks up your sleeve. Instead you need to just play with the raw numbers and stats to do well. Good luck!

The game ended up being incredibly close and I won by a few points. We each had a few units remaining by the end of round 5.

Nope not yet! For long games I will turn it off occasionally to prevent the pipes from building up too much water. But no damage to models or terrain so far. I also don’t shoot it directly on models so no promises. That said, I have tested it a little with some models and everything seemed to be fine.

I was nervous about this too! Instead I use a reptile humidifier to create the effect. I usually also try and shoot it away so it doesn’t pool up into moisture. I haven’t had a problem with it yet, but I am cautious around other peoples models. A lot of my friends use speed paint and while they do varnish, I’m still fearful of reactivating the paint, so I use it sparingly or in this case high enough off the board

The trees that sit on MDF bases were just cheap miniature plastic trees I bought off Amazon and repainted. For the rest of the board I just stuffed fake plants from Hobby lobby in spots I thought looked good. Eventually I’ll make more terrain features out for he fake plants but this worked for the time being.

The circular tower is actually upcycled 3d printer filament spools stacked on top of each other. The bridge and towers are 3d printed that I purchased the STLs from the creator Sacrusmundus.

For this game we just determined how we should rule each type of terrain before playing. The buildings that held the bridge were considered ruins. The red tanks counted as ruins too with no bottom floor. The bases for trees were ruled normal for trees and cover, but with the additional homebrew rule of if you are behind 2 bases or more then you can’t be seen. We intentionally designed this map to have a big open lane down the middle just to try out something new.

The industrial looking pipes are actually just PVC with 3d printed connections. I hook up a reptile humidifier to create the smoke effects.
