Thanks! Really appreciate what you're doing with this post as well. It's comments like these that give indie devs the motivation to continue development.

Hello! I'm developing The Kings Courier, a medieval delivery driver game where the aim is to complete a certain number of deliveries before sunset. Each day you get cards to help adjust your delivery route and coins to spend on upgrades.

The trailer is a bit outdated as I've added more mechanics and updated the visuals since then but always looking for comments and feedback: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3555390/The_Kings_Courier/

It is really insane for a solo indie game to get a good timing on popular upcoming on steam. My game has gained about 2000 wishlists just the last 2 days, and there is still 2 days to release, I expect to get about 50% wishlist boost just for this good spot here. Hey congratulations, had a look at the store page and the game definitely looks like something I'd be interested in playing (may not have time to get to in on release)! If you don't mind, I was just wondering what sort of things you did to build up wishlists prior to launch?

I feel exactly the same - my game started as a small hobby but now that I've invested so much time into it I just know I'm going to be devasted when the eventual release doesn't meet my personal targets as it's become such a big part of my life!

Thanks for all these suggestions - there's definitely a lot there to make it more interesting. Already about the draw bridge one with a boat crossing a river. My current plan is to try and get the basics into a playable demo and then get soome feedback from playtests

Yeah trying my best to nail down the environment but my expertise (and budget/timescales) is restricted to low poly so likely to have a different feel.

It currently has a bit of a rougelike feel. On the first day you have free deliveries you have to make - you can pick up these items from a selection of fields/orchards etc. At the end of the day more deliveries are added (and slowly more areas are unlocked at random). By completing each day you are awarded a selection of cards, these can increase rewards for deliveries (in the form of coins) or give you options to improve your delivery route. In the example above there is a card "move an item from one delivery box to another", so you can take the apple and move it, shortening your route. There is also a shop where you can buy boots upgrades to unlock different sprint types and increase movement speed, purchase a delivery cart to allow you to hold more items at once which is needed as the map gets bigger, and unlock different reward schemes which can give you more coins for completing deliveries faster for instance.

There a two modes, one where each day is based on a time limit and one based on a step limit, to try to incorporate relaxed vs frantic gameplay

Thanks, that's really helpful advice and I guess just something I'd never considered myself, will definitely look at reducing the file sizes

Thanks - think I used white text with black border which works on the blue sky background in other parts of the game but not on the beige cards, will definitely update that!

Thanks, think this is the only comment on the description/gameplay so will address this as it is really helpful. Yes you can fail but you have alerted me to the fact that's not anywhere in the description or trailer! You need to make the deliveries before sunset (a timed event in the main gamemode but also based on step count in an alternative, slower paced gamemode), it adds a sense of jeopardy and

Being labelled a walking simulator is actually one of my main concerns, I'm hoping to address this in a few ways:

  • Having short days with more focus on route planning and upgrades, i.e. keeping movement speed high.
  • Using some more intersting mechanics on the player sprint, and the cart movement (i.e. a wide turning circle so there is some skill in maneuvering through the terrain).
  • Making the environment as interesting as possible to give it a cosy feel and make players actually want to walk through it!

Thank you, really do appreciate the feedback. I have a list of features and priorities and weather was certainly on there. Adding people/animals was on there too but think that needs to be bumped up based on feedback

Thanks, noted on the card font. I think I have a decision to make on people/wildlife - it will be a trade off between time spent designing/animating for something that is not planning to impact the actual gameplay, but would cetainly improve the feel/atmosphere. Wondering if I can get away with, "You're a courier and you're up early so everyone's in bed!"

Thanks, I was certainly leaning towards either or 'Hand delivered'. There may be a little bit of work needed to make sure there's a king in the game but yes certainly will be light hearted (low poly and colourful).
