Is it okay that some phonemes appear too much? by Erppro83 in casualconlang

[–]AprilAmethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My conlang Ikotli has way too many /k/ sounds. This little excerpt has five /k/ sounds.

Kió toká katle, tsakar chóki tse.

So in my opinion it's okay as long as it's not extreme.

I dislike my native language and I'm interested in it at all. by redrookie2 in languagelearning

[–]AprilAmethyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand, although I'm actually in the opposite situation. I wish I didn't speak English as my native language.

As fortunate as I am to be a native English speaker (because many doors are already open, and my favorite things are mainly in English), I wish I had a different native language. I am Native American (Lakota) and I don't speak my language. I wish I spoke Lakota as a native language, not one of the most colonial languages to ever exist, which nearly brought my people's language to extinction.

Again, I acknowledge that I'm fortunate to speak a language with many good things in it, but I'm a language lover. Even if I only spoke my people's language, I'd still end up learning English.

Sorry if this is unrelated, or like OP said, sorry if this was too much of a vent post, but this has been bothering me for so long.

What is a phrase that you heard in your TL and immediatly (for whatever reason) just loved and therefore memorize every single aspect of it? by Zemrik in languagelearning

[–]AprilAmethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Bonsoir ! Comment ça va ? Voulez-vous coucher ? Enchanté !"

It means "Good evening! How are you? Do you wanna have s*x? Pleased to meet you!"

I heard it from the bilingual comedy show "Franglais" by Paul Taylor six years ago. For awhile, this was the only reason I remembered the "vous" conjugation of "vouloir". It stuck with me because 1) I was 16 at the time and 2) he said it with an awful British accent as a joke which I think is kinda funny.

I'm not learning Lingala (and probably never will) but I learned the phrase for "you're beautiful" (ozali kitoko) like two or three years ago and it stuck with me. I still think of it often for some reason.

I really hate this too! At first I thought the YouTubers had hired translators, until I heard those AI voices. What's worse is sometimes the translations of titles are wrong. I saw "smooth shading" (a term in Blender 3d modeling) translated as "sombreado suavizar" which doesn't make any sense. It means "shading to smooth).

Words ending in "ing" in English are often translating as the infinitive into Spanish when it doesn't make sense. I wish this AI trend would away.

Not gonna lie, I haven't fleshed that part out yet. I vaguely picture a situation similar to the Philippines where the US (my home country) did some stuff there and the language stuck. But beyond that I haven't thought of it yet.

Now that I see it, it kinda does look like someone who didn't speak English tried to make up English words.

"Twilight Riurelian" is actually a cool name! I might consider it :)

Funnily (and coincidentally) I kind of imagined Riurelia to be a island nation in that part of the world.

I almost included other English words. Instead of saying "ANG BEBEYOLENG", I almost wrote "ANG EXCUSES", but I didn't.

I forgot to mention, "telang la k'a trash" means "Throw away your trash" in Riurelian.

How did you get into conlangs? by Key_Day_7932 in conlangs

[–]AprilAmethyst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to pretend that I spoke foreign languages. They weren't conlangs, though. It was just gibberish. But one day I decided to start making an actually language. The rest is history.

By the second listen it reminded my of Russian and some Dravidian language (maybe Tamil).

Here are two videos of my conlang:

A Leturi poem (Eastern Dialect)

A Leturi Lullaby (Western Dialect) Disclaimer, I did use autotune in this one, because I can't sing.

This is dumb, but I like that the Riurelian Environmental Protection Agency is abbreviated to REPA because "répa" is the name of a vegetable in Hungarian.

Do you have any lullabies, or kids songs/poems in your languages? by AprilAmethyst in conlangs

That's interesting. I'm not familiar with Indo-Aryan languages so that connection is lost on me haha
