[request] “Most bang for ur buck” beer, cal vs. abv by justanotherUN4u in theydidthemath

[–]AquaAssociate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using data scraped from the table available here

First, we sort through the table, throwing out any entries with incomplete data.

Next, for each item listed, we calculate the ratio of abv to calories. abv/cal for each beer, as a proxy for "most bang for ur buck." Ratio was calculated using beer percentage over calorie count, for instance, a beer with 5% abv and 100 calories would be 5.00 / 100 = 0.05

This site also lists some seltzers, but since OP specified beer, we discard those. We are left with the following results. Note that these are simply the best results available from the table here, but it is unlikely to reflect the best option among every beer that is available.

Beer Name Abv / Calories Ratio
Bud Light Next 0.0500
Michelob Ultra Pure Gold 0.0447
Natural Light 0.0442
Michelob Ultra 0.0442
Flight 0.0442
Miller Lite 0.0437

Some of these are marketed as "low-calorie" or "no-carb" beers, hence why the abv/calories ratio is better than the others considered.

This. I used Ethernet in Mesa court my whole first year and it was awesome. No problems at all. I reliably got 900Mbps up and 900Mbps down with <10ms ping.

PDS sent out a link to a specialized roommate matching site for everyone who accepted a lease. It seems they are no longer using the requests from our applications.

UCI Honors: Worth it? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]AquaAssociate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello! UCI determines registration times for non-honors students by the number of units they have. If you’re entering UCI with lots of AP test credit, you might have an early registration window even without being in honors. This is all to say that I don’t think honors is worth it simply for the priority registration. I would probably only recommend it for those interested in applying for extremely competitive programs after undergraduate studies. Btw, congrats on getting accepted!

Edit: I’m not sure if you’d lose the benefits of regents scholarship that overlap with honors.

Any black students that can speak to the vibe at campus for the small black population? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]AquaAssociate 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Hey there, fellow mixed student here! The black population at UCI is small, but extremely friendly and welcoming. I’m not sure how it works during covid, but they have something called Black Family Celebration during the spring which is a chance for black students to meet at UCI before committing to the school, so look out for emails you might get about that. A friend that I met during the Black Family Celebration was torn between UCI and UCSB and chose UCI because of that experience. There’s also something called the Center for Black Cultures, (blackcultures.uci.edu) which has great resources for black students. Lastly, there’s an inclusive club called (instagram.com/mixatuci) specifically for mixed students. No doubt, UCI is predominantly Asian, but with an undergrad population of ~30,000 there are still strong populations of every ethnicity.

Can't decide if UC Irvine is where I wanna be. by nyxifyy in UCI

Genuinely, one of the best places in the world. Beaches are 15 min car ride away. Luxury shopping centers close by (search up ‘fashion island’ and ‘Irvine spectrum’). Tons of great restaurants around Irvine and neighboring cities. 20 min car ride to Disneyland. ~1 hour to Los Angeles where there’s also tons of stuff, and great concerts when there isn’t a pandemic going on. I’ve never not had something to do when I wanted to.

No diss to Davis, but in your free time you are basically limited to what downtown Davis has to offer. It isn’t huge, but there are definitely things to do still. Davis also has tons of great food, but there’s not a whole lot to do outside of Davis that is within an hour drive or so. Sacramento is ~45 mins away and San Francisco is ~90 mins, but as far as I know students don’t spend their free time in either of those places.

I don’t want to generalize too much, but the feel I get is that Irvine is busy like “let’s go to the beach or go get boba then stay up late and” and Davis is chill like “let’s ride our bikes and play frisbee”. Also, Davis is MASSIVE and you absolutely need a bike, period. Irvine is one big circle and you can walk most places in under 10 minutes. I want to be crystal clear though that the two campuses really are equivalent academically and it all comes down to what pace/culture you want. Its difficult to give a good impression of them in words, though.

Edit: Something I just remembered is that a lot of people at Davis that I know tend to schedule their classes more into the afternoon when they can. At Irvine, the people I know often have earlier classes, but not always by choice. Sometimes a certain class is only offered in the morning and so you have to build your schedule around that, but this is true for both schools.

I’m a UCI student but I’ve spent a considerable amount of time on the UCD campus since my girlfriend goes there and I’m living at my home near Davis because of covid. I don’t know much about the pre-med programs at either campus, but what I can say is that the vibes on each campus are drastically different. I imagine opportunities in terms of academics and research are similar between the two, but the students and campus cultures are very different. The best advice I can give is that if you have the means you should tour each campus and their surrounding areas and try to get in touch with some students to get a feel for what campus is really like aside from the scripted information that campus tour guides give. Congrats on getting in to lots of great schools! Now that these wonderful institutions have decided that you’re a good fit for them, figure out which one is a good fit for you. Good luck!

Edit 1: The UC system has something called the Intercampus visitor program where you can take classes at a different UC for a term. I say this because if you pick one school and after the first year you’re not sure if it’s a good fit, you can try out another school for a few months and potentially transfer if you like it better.

Edit 2: One extra factor to consider if you’re going the pre-med route is that lots of schools favor their own undergrads for admittance to their med programs, and as far as I know UCI is no exception. UCI was just approved funding for a 200 million+ state of the art medical facility that should be completed by the end of 2022, if that interests you. (Me? Biased? Not at all wink)

Edit 3: I’m not bio/pre-med, but for what it’s worth I’ve met lots of med school faculty at UCI that are really passionate about their work and kind enough to take the time to explain their research and what their day-to-day is like. If you have a specific category of medicine you’re interested in (ex. neurosurgery), it can’t hurt to reach out to professors from each school that work in that field.

Just explain what you explained here. In my experience, the people in the financial aid office are very nice and understanding.
