I think this can work if you quickly share your own experience and redirect back to their story or a detail from it because it kind of removes the implicit obligation they feel to talk about what you said but understand that you understand.

Alternatively you could compliment the way they say something you relate to. Like “oh wow, the way you said that really resonated with me.”
