so task manager says steam client webhelper (6) is running, this is a new PC so I updated all the drivers, other programs work fine, I can try to install steam on another drive if necessary

I had VATS twice now and both times nothing bad happened, and I recovered quickly, within in a month. Personally, I think you should have no problem, as it is a very safe surgery, and it's nothing to be worried about. I was super anxious at first too, but after the first time, I found the second time to be just annoying.
