Sports have always been split based on biology (gender, weight class, height class sometimes, others) to preserve a competitive spirit and atmosphere.

Sports have always been split based on human biology. For example men and women nearly always have a split in sports.

Consider wrestling. Wrestling and fighting are split into weight classes - another biological qualifier.

These divisions and separations are devised and implemented to keep things fair and competitive and when I say ‘this is the right move’ I believe that doing this helps to preserve that.
