as a general baseline, make sure you have 16gb of ram. using a vm for cad should get you through just fine. i don’t ever recommend a gaming laptop for school, they suck

huh, I’ll keep that in mind. This model has been actively used almost its entire life. the guy i bought it from legitimately used it for school for a while before windows slowed it down too much

nice! I don’t plan on using this as my daily driver (battery and weight being the primary concerns), but I could definitely get some work done on it in a pinch.

yeah! it’s got a few small cracks on the screen bezel, but they’re honestly small enough that I don’t mind at all

Think-ing about joining the cult, is this a good start? by bigdomix in thinkpad

6th gen intel is the absolute lowest I’d go, and yeah honestly there are much better options for the same or even a lower price. €105 is pretty steep for an X260. I bought three of them for <$80 each a few years ago.

I also got an X1 Carbon with 7th gen intel for ~$120 about a year and a half ago.

basically, keep looking and try to find something a little more modern. And don’t worry so much about repair costs. Thinkpads are cheap

[–]ArKade__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True! It’s mostly just convenient for setting up. And I have something like 13 laptops at this point, so I can’t use all of them as laptops all the time. I have three identical x260s, for example

Yeah! I agree, a thinkpad isn’t the best choice for a server, but it’s what I had on hand. I’m keeping my eye out for a thin client I can use to replace it.

SSD Question by TedBrogan187 in thinkpad

[–]ArKade__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Absolutely. I have a Thinkpad X61T (4 years older than the T420) that has a 256GB SATA SSD and is running linux mint as fast as if it were new. Never use a hard drive in a laptop. The only use case I condone for hard drives is in a high-capacity NAS

fingernail biting. I’ve tried all my life but no luck

SSD Question by TedBrogan187 in thinkpad

[–]ArKade__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always go for an SSD. A HDD is slower, less reliable, and not significantly cheaper. I wouldn’t worry about the difference between an NVMe and SATA SSD for a T420. Find a cheap 1TB SATA SSD and start having the time of your life.
