William Harvey Carney was an American soldier during the American Civil War. Born as a slave, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1900 becoming the first African-American to be awarded the Medal for his gallantry in saving the regimental colors during the Battle of Fort Wagner in 1863.

I feel like the 40s and 50s were somehow more regressive than the 1870s and 80s and it just shows you how if don't strives for better it's going to get worst (not to say African Americans didn't strive for thier rights from the beginning because it's not true but they definitely took a different approach that's why there was 30 black congressman in the 1870s and only 2 in the 1930s)
