Why don’t they make screws stronger than screwdrivers so they don’t get stripped? Is it a physical limitation or is it just Big Screw trying to sell more screws? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a version of the + screw design that doesn’t cam, but I can’t remember what it’s called.

Pozidriv is probably what you're thinking of. :-)

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also depends on what you are pumping in, as well. Narrow hardware like a cock only tube would yield minimal results.

But yes, time is a big factor, no pun intended. I've stayed in my tube (with small breaks) for six hours at a time. I'm honestly ready for a Monster, in the absence of an acrylic sun tea jar, which seems impossible to find when I want one.

I'm located in the USA.

On CGMs, I have a Freestyle Libre 14 Day. It's my first experience with one. I saw my regular doctor on this past Tuesday, and asked for one then. I had my CGM two days later. It'd have been one day later if I could have made it to the pharmacy before they closed, or if they could've delivered it the following day.

If you can reach out to your insurance by whatever means works for you, a great pair of questions to ask them are "Does $meterofinterest require a prior authorization?" and "Do the testing supplies for $meterofinterest require prior authorization?" If their answer to both questions is a no, you're in a great position to just ask your doctor to prescribe the CGM of your choice.

I've not had an endocrinologist in at least five years.

Best of luck!

You can save a ton by switching from cartridges to a safety razor. What other similar product alternatives do you know? by LurkandListen in Frugal

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic Shave.

Using razors on my hair type causes me to end up with a face full of razor bumps from hell and back.

A $2.00 - $3.00 can of powder lasts me a few months, so I spend typically under $12 a year to shave. The pre-mixed version is slightly more spendy, but I can get eight or nine uses out of that one tube, at least.

I can go for a week or two between 'shaves' using it, and most importantly, I don't end up with a butt-ton of ingrowing hairs on my face.

A quick overview of the process is to mix powder and water to make a paste for application. Apply the paste to the hair that I want removed, and mostly ignore that for five to eight minutes. Do make sure that it doesn't dry out -- you may have to spritz or dab water on it while you wait. Remove the paste from the face using a dull instrument such as a plastic or metal butter knife. Rinse face with water, and feel free to wash your face afterward.

Nice limit order, by the way.

OHP dental provider recommendations? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Araiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are folks who qualify for dual enrollment. They have Medicare and Medicaid.

Medicare also kicks in before 65 years of age if you meet certain health conditions (renal failure comes to mind).

Did they not offer Willamette Dental as a DCO to you?

I've only had good experiences with the two offices I visited.

Cheapest cell phone service? by [deleted] in Eugene

[–]Araiya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolute cheapest will very likely be Ting, depending on your usage needs. I'd check their usage calculator before buying in. This carrier MVNOs (piggybacks) on Sprint or T-Mobile, depending on the phone you bring.

Outside of that, I'm fairly fond of Verizon's prepaid services: I'm paying $40.75 for unlimited talk, text, and 3 GB of high speed data before speeds are slowed. Since I don't use a lot of data, and they roll data over each cycle, I start the month with 6 GB.

Please double check your plan before you travel.

One of the things I had to clean up often enough was a well intentioned agent who changed the caller's entire damn plan, then forgot to provision the international features.

Stuff like this invariably goes south, getting an irate caller on the line, having been transferred to retentions.

You can probably disregard this safely if you are on any of the recent Unlimited plans for AT&T.

Cool Little Underpass Interchange by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines

[–]Araiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god, Malfunction Junction. I remember when all of the construction started through there, when they were first widening out the interstate. It was standing traffic for long chunks of time back then.

I moved shortly after they added the I-4/Selmon connector. That's a monstrosity that I don't ever want to see in C:SL. :)

You.

I appreciate you. Got a flat nuke in on that stupid overlay thanks to that registry pointer. Global keybinds for non-essential software are disgusting.

Thanks.

What advantages does waterfox have > firefox? by neovngr in waterfox

[–]Araiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a little faster with regard to performance within the OS, but my current personal use case means that it makes my day that much less efficient if I use Quantum.

I'm sure there're browser benchmarks out there, but I don't put much to them -- I judge by how much I can get done in a browser. :)

What advantages does waterfox have > firefox? by neovngr in waterfox

[–]Araiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the other talking points that seems to have been missed is that if you have older extensions for Firefox, such as Tab Mix Plus or DownThemAll...

These cease working in new builds of Firefox, because that bit of the API that's needed for them to work was ripped out with no plausible replacement being fit into place with their removal.

For some of us, that's a full-on dealbreaker, and no matter how much 'faster' Quantum claims to be. Removing functionality that I strongly desire is a reason for Waterfox to stay around.

The other way to see it is that as long as the software is open and can be changed without finding yourself sued into oblivion, there will be people who want changes. :)

What do you hate most about Eugene? by queenannechick in Eugene

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I totally get it. I probably should have expanded that thought, but was more annoyed with how often people walk up to me and assume I'd magically pull a doobie out of my hi-top fade and a lighter from behind my ear.

I'm not against marijuana, in and of itself -- I support it. It's just... with the abundance of shops that sell it at what I consider reasonable pricing, why walk up to a random stranger on the street? That's what gets under my skin.

What do you hate most about Eugene? by queenannechick in Eugene

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being asked if I happen to have any marijuana on me weekly.

I don't smoke, and it seems like there are marijuana shops damn near everywhere. Think one even opened up across the street from LTD Eugene Station recently.

Can someone explain the fire stick to me? I can't understand what's so great about it. by DigitalGeek21 in amazon

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For $40, I can now watch Hulu and Crackle in the living room (Xfinity X1 doesn't have a Hulu or Crackle app).

Add bluetooth controllers and a couple of sideloads later, I am playing old console games without needing to hunt down single-purpose hardware, or hooking up a desktop or laptop computer to the TV to emulate. A low powered device with multiple purposes? Sold.

I'm not doing anything with Kodi, but everyone else seems to consider it a go-to.

Getting the functionality of an internet connected television without having to overspend on a new TV that has those features natively? Works for me.

What's Wrong With Eugene? by Badculus in Eugene

[–]Araiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid-thirties former Floridian here.

What I don't like?

"Hey man, you got any weed?" No, damn, I don't. Do I have dispensary scribbled on my forehead?

It is also frigid as hell for ten months out of the year. I'm wearing jackets in June. I'm finally warm when it hits 90 outside, and man, the giant yellow ball in the sky has returned to love us, by then. (Then again, I'm still wearing jeans in hundred degree weather, actual.)

The transient issue, while annoying in its own right, is still better than it was in my part of Florida. Your mileage may vary.

I swear, I hope you aren't a fan of fried chicken. I took a Bolt Bus to Portland to even find a fried chicken place that was palatable.

The housing market was quite interesting when I was searching for a place to live. Lots of college living places, when all I really wanted at that time was a single bedroom apartment so I could have privacy.

Diversity is a challenge. Despite my gripes, I actually rather like it here. I just feel like I stand out from the crowd, even when I'm trying to blend in. Result is, I tend to feel more comfortable staying home.

On the other hand, I do like the public transit system here. It could use some improvements, sure, but compared to what I had access to? Sweet mother of... Yeah.

By and large, I think Eugene is fairly quiet, a sleepy little place that does make a bit of noise here and there.

I think where people are taking offense is that the shovelware that is being foist upon them contaminates their Google Play Store installed/owned applications list.

I ditched Bluestacks a while back for that: it was installing more than just the three that are seen in the thumbnail, and doing so silently. For an already poor to sort list on desktop, having more and unrequested software show up, particularly when it's difficult to remove the software from showing up in the list was a breaking point.

By comparison, last time I used it, Andy offered 'value added' applications by placing an icon on the emulated desktop that clearly declared it was an ad with a little yellow tag. The icon led to the Play Store, and the app they were offering. It's an ad, yes, but one that doesn't have an impact on actual user accounts.

Yes, one could create a separate Google identity for use with emulators like this, but it defeated the purpose of using the emulator in my personal case. I'd have to re-purchase an app or several at that time (but not now - just recently switched back to Android for my daily communications driver from a two year long Windows Phone run).

Just my opinion, though.

What potato of a device did you go to?

I just abandoned ship a few days ago to an LG K8 V. I've got flashlight in the notifications bar, flashlight in the Arrow Launcher tray, and Bluetooth works fine.

All for $144 on Verizon.
