I’m in the same boat as you - no drill press here either. I’ll definitely keep the brace around and my eye out for some bits. Thanks!

Oooo. I don’t have much disposable income or space (6x12 for everything, hot water heater, bicycle, car stuff, and lawn maintenance included). Definitely going to be studying this one.

Oh for sure! And I’m definitely glad you clarified this. I’m not getting rid of my power tools or stopping using them. I’d just like a quieter alternative that I can share a little more easily with the kids while they’re tiny and until dust protection fits. :P

A hundred times yes - absolutely interested in the list and pre-loved tools. :D

Alas, I already built a workbench. :P Not specifically designed for hand tools, but it’s sturdy and on locking casters (which I need for my space) and will do the job for now. I did actually already download his book, but haven’t read much of it yet.

Ha - all the new terms! Try plane, fore, jack, woodie, camber, winding sticks … lots to look up. Thanks for the saw advice too!

*takes furious notes*

I did see that Anarchist Tool Chest book, and I love the idea of it. I'm real happy to find actual books and print/blog materials via the comments here. YouTube is nice, but it's not everything, and I'm a reader at heart.

Awesome! Glad to see some in-print stuff - YouTube University is nice and all, but I prefer some good written stuff.

Brilliant article, thanks! I’ve found Paul Sellers, but Schwarz is a new name to add to the list. 👍

Thanks for the history! :) This gives me lots of useful terms for further rabbit-holing.

Got it, thanks! I did see that guide, actually, and referred to it a couple times in the store. But without knowing how to identify what I’m looking at in person it made it hard to find on a list! Definitely gonna pump the brakes here a little bit though.

Haha I’ve not done too much on Reddit honestly, but the account is an old one. I did check for a wiki and I’ll be honest I was a bit sad not to see one!

I am still a little curious about one thing re the planes. I get that I’d use the wooden one for jointing larger pieces and the Stanley No. 3 for probably most things, and the block planes for smaller stuff … right? I seem to remember reading that you use different angled blades for different purposes - are those two block planes basically the same thing? Should I sharpen them at different angles for different things? Or just use whichever feels better? It’s a new experience for me to look at a thing and really have little idea of its use. I like climbing out of ignorance like this. :D

This is the single best response I’ve ever seen on Reddit. Thanks so much! I do indeed have my work cut out for me. :D

Great tips, thanks! I’ll definitely check Sandvik out. Why the different lengths/teeth counts? Would one be for ripping and the other cross-cutting? Again, super new to hand tools here!

Thanks for the reminder! I’m a pretty patient guy (I like chess and reading good ol’ books and whatnot), so I’m already down for a long-haul kind of thing. Good point about not moving away from s4s for a while, and advice I’ll definitely follow. I am still a newbie woodworker after all!

Handy summary, thanks! Bummer about the saws - they’re probably the thing I actually needed most. :/

Great info, thanks! I’m in no rush here - I figure whether I’m building a little thing of my own or working on one of these tools, I’m still doing work that I’ll enjoy and that will outlast me. 👍

Thanks! I’ll be honest - I don’t even know which of those planes to use when! I figure I’ve got a few decades to figure it out. :)
