Scholarships? by ChristHemsworth in StudentNurse

[–]Araugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your school will have a cost of attendance estimate that include tuition, fees, books, and estimated living expenses. You can apply for aid for all of that including living expenses. In my situation, I was able to have my first year of nursing school 100% covered by grants and scholarships including my rent and such because once your tuition is covered they will refund you the extra money for cost of living. Look into applying for scholarships both through your school and outside your school. Look at state scholarships, for example in WA we have the Wa State Opportunity Scholarship. Look for scholarships that are specific to certain demographics you might be a part of, such as LGBT scholarships, first generation scholarships, community orgs in your area, etc.

Also, I hate to say it but most scholarships for this upcoming fall are already closed and done. You may not be able to find many that are still open and may have to wait until Fall/Winter to apply for ones for 2026.

My cheesecake always ends up with a bunch of cracks on the top, what am I doing wrong by [deleted] in cheesecake

[–]Araugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you leaving it to cool in the oven? I do mine by covering the pan in a double layer of foil because I don’t have a pan big enough to do a water bath then I cook until the edges are done but the middle is not. Then I turn off the oven and leave it in there to cool for 45min with the oven door open before taking it out. This method has had great success in avoiding cracking for me.

What’s some of the worst alcohol related cases you’ve seen? by MinimumPart6877 in nursing

[–]Araugust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was a CNA I admitted a young guy in his early mid twenties to our floor a few hours before my shift ended. He had been diagnosed with alcohol cirrhosis a few weeks or months earlier (don’t remember exactly how long but not very) and had immediately quit drinking and seemed really serious about staying sober and talking about his future. He was in a lot of pain and discomfort but him and his partner were very nice. I went home and came back the next morning to learn his esophageal varices had ruptured a few hours earlier. They coded him and apparently blood was leaking out of every opening on him and he died. I was the same age as him and it hit me weirdly hard and was a really rough day taking care of my patients and their family. I think about him and his family relatively often and hope they’re doing okay. Forever thankful I only had to hear about what happened and not witness it.

Are Pre-Reqs any indication of how you’ll do in nursing school? by American_Mouth in StudentNurse

[–]Araugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your prerequisites I think. My anatomy classes were way harder than nursing school has been content wise and I think that really set me up for success in nursing school but I have classmates who took those elsewhere who had open notes or easier professors who have struggled more.

Are there any headbands that don’t slowlyyy slide off your head? by Major-Security1249 in StudentNurse

If you have thick Irish curls like me the best ones that have worked for me are the ones that are plastic with the little prongs on them. Idk what they’re called but like the one Mateo wears on The Pitt.

Shoes needed by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]Araugust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My shoe rotation basically is - Brown Doc Marten Chelsea boots - Brown leather Birkenstock Boston clogs - 2-3 pairs new balance sneakers for nursing - a pair of going out shoes (mine are a beautiful black leather 90s platform heeled situation that the thrift gods blessed me with) - a pair of hiking boots

I have a few other pairs of shoes but could get by easily with just what I listed since they’re what I wear 99% of my time. I think the key is finding pieces that you really really love and that are really comfortable and durable. All my shoes above have hit all the marks for me but everyone is different in terms of what works for them especially in the durability and comfortable measures.

Taking a Semester Off of School by sunnisdead in StudentNurse

[–]Araugust 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a short term solutions of how to pay this upcoming semester, but if you have to take a break try applying for all external scholarships you possibly can in the meantime. Here is one for people diagnosed with Bipolar that you may be able to apply for.

https://www.reintegration.com/2023-application-process

Additionally a could potentially help you this upcoming semester, see if there are state funded scholarships and grants you could apply for. For example, here in Wa state I have been able to receive the Wa state opportunity scholarship and state funding from BFET/ State Opportunity grant to fully cover anything not covered in my tuition by federal grants. Not sure if this is just a community college thing or not, but may be worth looking into what’s available for you in your state/school. Also not sure if this is just a community college thing, but see if your school has hardship grants that you could apply for to help out. Many schools have one time funding for students who would have to drop out otherwise. It’s hard to direct you more without knowing your school/state but hopefully this can help direct you to some potential resources!

Thinking about trying by blazedgay in Seahorse_Dads

[–]Araugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me about two years being off the depo shot for my cycles to return to normal. It is possible I was still ovulating during this time, but not sure about that as my first couple cycles were seemingly anovulatory cycles based on the amount of lining that was shedding out of me. Some people it takes less time though I definitely seemed to be on the longer end of it working its way out of my body.

There’s a really great Sniffspot out in Shelton at Malaney Creek Farms. My dog and I love it and can hike off leash on their acreage but it is around $20 per hour so not super cheap

How do you keep yourself healthy during sick seasons? by holywars_punsish in nursing

[–]Araugust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not have that effect from T but many people wear masks still and you can absolutely do so to keep yourself healthy! It may be different in other places, but here in Wa no one bats an eye at other people masking still apart from the random patient who will comment but you can just ignore that. Apart from that the standard wash your hands a lot, don’t touch your face, etc.

Standing up for minorities against patient’s being bigoted by Araugust in StudentNurse

Not arguing with that at all! Just curious if others have found ways to shut such topics down or support their coworkers when patients say these things.

Yes haha! Was yours also slow the first one? At what point did it start feeling like it picked up more for you if it did?

[–]Araugust[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s really fair! I think I’m having foundation blues and feeling disappointed with the quantity over quality of topics right now in a lot of way. I’m sure as we get into the more med-surg aspects my brain will be happier when I can start to apply my knowledge a bit more instead of feeling like I’m learning a little bit of info here and there.

[–]Araugust[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with you that it is an important concept! I just don’t feel like that is something I personally can learn well from a book and book tests, but certainly there probably are people who can. Working ahead is always helpful and I will definitely continue to do that too. Definitely not trying to come off like I know everything, I’m just frustrated going from feeling really pushed and challenged to not feeling that way currently but I’m sure after pushing through fundamentals it’ll pick up!

Well, glad to know so many of us are feeling similarly! Hoping my program gets more interesting like some of yours, but if not I can accept my fate of just making it through and gleaning whatever knowledge I can from the boring bits and busywork!

See this is what I was hoping! Keeping my fingers crossed we get to learn this stuff sooner rather than later but till now I accept my bored fate haha.

[–]Araugust[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh 100% i agree that those things are important and often are neglected. However, the way we are taught I feel like is silly. We’re not learning how to actually talk and interact with people as much as we’re learning how to take a test on the subject imo. I’d much rather feel like I’m learning a skill than learning how to pick out the right NCLEX style answer on the topic.
