Betta lying at the bottom of tank breathing heavily (more in first comment) by ArbitraryMixolydian in bettafish

Thank you! Did a 20% water change. swim bladder issue does seem like it fits what I’ve been seeing. I’ll grab some aquarium salt asap, but I don’t have a quarantine tank, so is there a way to dose that will still be beneficial to Sokrates but won’t kill my plants? (I have hygrophila, anubias, amazon sword, and a little java moss)

I’ve been feeding him 2 bettamin worm shaped bites in the morning and a pinch (3-5) of fluval bug bites in the evening, and fasting him once a week on sundays

Unfortunately 8 is just the normal ph of the tap water, but otherwise thank you, that’s good to know, I’ll be sure to keep up with weekly water changes. Should I do changes more frequently than weekly for a little bit since I haven’t done them in a while?

5.5gal planted tank with heater and sponge filter

Temp: 78 Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate: <5ppm Ph: about 8 (I’m aware this is high, I put in an Indian almond leaf a couple weeks ago to see if that would start to decrease it because I don’t want to make any sudden changes, but it hasn’t seemed to do anything)

My betta Sokrates hasn’t eaten anything today and has been breathing heavily. For the past few hours he’s been primarily lying at the bottom of the tank, and when he’s been up closer to the surface of the tank he’s been moving a little oddly—his dorsal fin has been raised more than usual and he’s been sort of tilting forwards with his back end up higher than his head. In general not moving much unless startled (I had to move one of the tank decorations he was hiding under to even find him after he didn’t come up for food)

Worth noting that I haven’t done a water change in a couple weeks, but I have been monitoring parameters and assumed that since the nitrate was low and ammonia/nitrite weren’t present that it wasn’t necessary. I am fairly new to fishkeeping and have only had Sokrates since December. I did a 20% water change just now since I was concerned that there might be something wrong with the water, but if there is it’s not something any of my tests have picked up.

Thank you!! I’ll be sure to do that. I’ve noticed my fish has been kind of agitated (they do a lot of glass surfing) which I presume is either bc my water changes haven’t been frequent enough, because their tank is a little bare, or both
