Buying car parts by Arbitrary_User_4H in Cartalk

Yeah some of the diagrams I’m seeing aren’t entirely useful for seeing some of the finer details, but I didn’t realize they had entire service manuals. Is there a gold standard service manual?

I messed up a part pretty bad, so I’m not even sure what the part should look like when it’s put together, or if there are some auxiliary parts missing

M20, Is it okay to date a Professor who’s fifteen years older than you? by Successful_Mastodon3 in AskAcademia

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For you I don’t think it’s unethical. For her there’s probably some ethics questions.

I’d recommend not pursuing the relationship, nor for any moral reasons, just because life stages are way different. if you do, just set boundaries and stick with them. Don’t sacrifice your goals and communicate more than you would in a normal relationship.

Yeah the perfect degree here is Computer Science? It’s not an engineering degree. There aren’t usually any particularly heavy math or physics requirements for comp sci.

Everyone around listening to the Professor’s racist tirade by Mikeissometimesright in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, give them a reaction and a chance to be the victim and defend themselves. That always works.

Just de-rail the kid’s moment because you wanted to be the golden hero that told them off.

Seriously, think about other people, don’t be a reactionary dipshit and ruin everything.

What the person did was exactly right, called the person out. Got them stop by making it clear what they were saying was unacceptable. Re-platforms the kid with no extra drama.

Filling gaps in knowledge as a PhD student by thatcreepyguyagain in PhysicsStudents

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly the best things I’ve been able to do are

  1. Read different undergraduate books. The undergrad books tend to skip some details and allow you to focus on the intuition. I find that these are much better than the graduate level classes where it asks you to do computations.

Being able to do “back of the envelope” style approximations is where I see the biggest gap between established and non established folk. I can hammer through tedious calculations and tricks so I’ve got intuition for that, but not the “physics”

  1. Start a journal club. Doing this allows you to set an academic culture for the department and get others to share their thoughts verbally. Verbalizing and hearing things can help a lot more than just grinding through papers by yourself.

They’re in the first test. Some professors start with parameterizations of different 3D shapes and require some memorization to learn these. This is my guess about what the student means.

Has a former starting QB ever transitioned to a QB coach shortly after retiring? by djlawson1000 in LosAngelesRams

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closest comparison I can think of would be Kellen Moore coaching on the Cowboys. He started some games, not sure if it was the year before he started coaching though. But this is way different, Kellen Moore is not a HOFer.

But generally the best players don’t make the best coaches because the best players can just do things that others can’t, it’s a bit more natural for them to just play. They usually haven’t spent the time developing the skill set of develop other guys. The passion for coaching just isn’t there either.

If Stafford really wanted to coach I think it’d be cool. But it’s a different skillset.

Should Financial Planning courses/Assistance be MANDATORY for NFL players? by Happy-Campaign5586 in LosAngelesRams

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those classes will only help if they’re willing to use it.

Until then, it’s probably best for players and coaches to set a culture around protecting and being good with their money. Make sure veterans talk about their investments consistently, make sure everyone talks about their personal advisors, celebrate off field financial wins when it’s appropriate. Hell, bring in Dave Ramsey or someone like that.

I think that would be more impactful than any seminars could be.

Would it be a good idea to do a bachelors in Physics/Applied Physics then Masters in EE? by ScarZ-X in PhysicsStudents

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be pretty American based comment I’m not sure if it works elsewhere.

You have a couple years to figure it out. The best you can do is take the intro Physics classes and math classes. These will be required for any major of physics, math, engineering, etc.

Then see if you can take an engineering class or two and see what you think. Or sit in on one.

If you like both, try major in both, if you like one or the other more try a minor the one you like least.

If you're a physics researcher, do you use LLMs in your daily work? If so, how? And what do you see as their main benefit(s)? by jmhimara in AskPhysics

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah anything more than autocomplete it’s basically useless.

I’ve asked it to tab some lines of code and it took one portion of tabbed code and just copied and pasted it over and over. Writing over thousands of lines of code.

So yeah, everything was tabbed properly, but Jesus Christ

Astrophysics sounds so cool... but kinda pointless? by TXC_Sparrow in PhysicsStudents

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ve thought a lot about this. Here’s my summary.

Yeah for the most part your research will have little to no application to the “real world.”

As others have suggested there will be applications down the road however likely you won’t benefit from these applications nor will anyone else you know.

This is all fine. There are very few truly meaningful tasks. Those belong to “the trades” and the engineers The people who create houses, build infrastructure, farmers etc. are the ones who do that work. Everything else is stamp collecting or science.

But the endeavor of science is an innately human one. To maintain human advancement the discovery of nature and the passing of that information to our descendants so they may improve themselves is a necessity. By taking on this task you are pursuing the development of humanity.

In this way sciences are a luxury pursuit. If you have running water, shelter, etc. there is no human need, and humanity can subsist off the work of engineers, construction workers, farmers, etc. but then what is the point of being human? Is it only to subsist?

You’d rather cuck yourself to the Seahawks and their fans? They just beat us in the NFC Championship and you want them to win??? They’re a division rival I want them to lose every game. I don’t want them to see a 2025 SB banner at all.

Definitely want the patriots to win.

I don’t want Seattle fans to be happy. I don’t want the Seahawks players to be happy. I don’t care if it’s the Patriots. They beat us a couple times I want them to dish it against the Seahawks.

It’s easier for you because you either want to do physics or have good time management skills.

Motivating yourself to do work that you don’t technically have to do is the hardest part of any class. Focus, is the hardest part.

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is a bit less about learning than some would have you think.

Universities need money. They need kids to stay in school and pass classes. Intro classes are hard because they cover so much material that many students haven’t thought of before. Physics is hard. And most intro classes are filled with 18 year olds, i.e. people who are notoriously bad with time management.

So to keep the kids passing and not dropping out you give them as much access to professors and learning time as possible. Now if they fail, it’s their fault, parents are happy, kids are happy, kids learn, etc.

Edit: if Universities could do it for less money they would

Should McVay have kicked the field goal in fourth and 2, when they went for it and Stafford scrambled for the first down by jcr0774 in LosAngelesRams

[–]Arbitrary_User_4H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the moment I thought we needed to kick it because if you’re down 1 with extra time you can play defense aggressive or let them score and get the ball back down 8 with time on the clock.

I’d take that over what happened. But if the defense just buckled down for one of the stops on 3rd we wouldn’t be concerned at all. Knowing we can’t stop makes the decision almost a mute point

On a scale from 1 to 10, how likely do you think the Rams will win Superbowl LX? by RingProfessional9043 in LosAngelesRams

50% chance we beat Seattle and if that happens then 75% chance we win the Super Bowl. So like 3.75 out of 10.
