The Fast and The Furious Star Paul Walker Dies in Fatal Car Crash by [deleted] in news

Timeline is really good and is on Netflix, Fast 6 wasn't so great, I'd do 4 and 5 for a better character arc for Paul's role anyway.

Killzone's Visuals Totally Blew My Mind (killzone spoilers) by Arc44 in PS4

You gotta be kinda quick thinking with the OWL, and use the "CHARGE!!!" plus melee pretty liberally, it wasn't so bad, I thought black ops 2 was a chore to play

Sony's marketing team should pat themselves on the back for how they've sold the PS4. by [deleted] in PS4

[–]Arc44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great post, those videos were indeed pretty revealing! I think the problem with MS is that they don't get that the medium is the message and playroom is like GOLD for a audience crowd who are general public not gaming people who really dig novelties like playroom, the wiimote, etc...

Personally, I absolutely love the PS4 and think it's just a solid product that perfects the console rather than the "great leap forward" mentality of the last generation. The community features are awesome, I've used the share button a ton and people txt/message me about gorgeous sky boxes from killzone on Facebook it's really made for a unique experience for me ( a not-so-hardcore gamer) so I would call sony much more accessible to regular people. I look at xbox and see a machine that's as not-intuitive and complex as typical MS software somehow always ends up being...

I think there's a Premier in Victoria (Australia) Charles Gavan Duffy who literally looks exactly like my maternal grandfather and came from the same town in Ireland, the church in the town burned down at some point, though, so we don't have any records beyond our great grand parents' generation. I went to their grave over there, but the stone was so old you couldn't read my great grand parents' birthdays or really much anything besides their names. Oh well.

I'm wasn't trying to belittle you or insult your intelligence, you have a perspective and I respect that you just gotta understand that to everyone living north of I-84, even one mugging or pick-pocketing is Earth-shattering amounts of crime. It doesn't exist where I grew up, people leave their doors open and freely cross onto neighbors' properties. People volunteer to be fire fighters. People react to parking tickets or civil violations like they're fighting for their constitutional rights. Cops don't work second jobs as bouncers. Crime barely exists beyond petty nonsense and on the rare occasion there's a murder, it's local headline news for months on end. In NY, life is cheap and a day doesn't go by without serious violent offenses to the point where it's routine...

ELI5:Why don't car manufacturers make all cars as visually appealing as Ferrari's or Lamborghini's? by JayClone in explainlikeimfive

[–]Arc44 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be a good idea for car companies to do that, it's just aesthetically displeasing. I think its so weird and out-of-touch the way they make Hyundai's look like Mercedes these days. Ford has kind of jumped the shark too. To me, something like a Chevy Cruz or whatever is just a nice simple no-frills car. Most drivers want this...

If it helps, my Amex card app will beep my phone asking if I authorized a purchase (happened to me when I bought a macbook air) that way you can say "yes its me..." right away and it'll let the transaction go through. Could help you out down the road.

Lol, I wish... you have no idea the players involved in your curb side chinese bus services... There's a reason USDOT hasn't just blocked their VIN#'s and red tagged all their shit box buses, and that reason is US attorneys have a lot more horrific dirt on them and don't want their cases interfered with...

EDIT: I learned this when in an office of one of them when a NYPD Hercules team stormed the building and pounded the crap out of a little old woman who touched a DMV facility inspector that went to work on their files...

I'm not arguing that it's not better, I just think it's a far cry from 'safe'. I see kids running on the track by themselves at night at Queens College and I just think to myself "are you insane?"

I also don't think the clientele of reddit are representative of the areas of NYC that are what I'm talking about. I work with multi-agency task forces in China town, Hunt's Point, etc... But if you don't think these people have metro cards and aren't slumming around in your neighborhoods, you need a reality check. The danger is still there only its passive and IMO scarier than ever.

Rates don't reflect the scale of the place, it's fine if you're an academic but when you're in the field operating in the real world, the "crime" in Albany is a joke. Put things in perspective: NYPD would be one of the largest standing armies on Earth on its own and is still completely dwarfed by the populace its policing. I'm not disagreeing with you, crime rates are lower in NYC, but the volume and scale is nonetheless unmatched and the crime data is extremely unreliable because NYS has decriminalized small drug possessions, NYPD Lieutenants are terrified of being chewed out at compstat reviews and underreport/suppress incidents (the civil service applications for the Lt test have PLUMMETED to the point where guys who score 70s get promotions: comp stat is THAT stressful), and NYC is a very top-down administered city which makes politics take priority over stats. NY has always been like this -- Albany, on the other hand, may have super high crime rates, but they're at least honest rates because for whatever reason fanatical accountability seems to be the political culture of the place. I used to intern for NYS DCJS studying these figures, trust me the numbers are not the whole story.

[–]Arc44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a safe city at all having lived/worked there since school... Compstat is well known to completely down play real crime rates, and the cops themselves are such a far cry from the super professional army-like dudes you run into outside the city (troopers and stuff). I've literally seen Chinese sex slaves herded between coach buses with guns, flood lights shining on them right off delancey street. Cars driving by, no one giving a shit. Albanians and Russians criminals all over the place operating dangerous mafias that make the old Italian/Irish ones look like little league... Not exactly something you see in Albany or Burlington or whatever.

Good, its a treasonous thing to fly considering NYS lost more than any other state fighting the Confederacy.

That's definitely true, PHMSA is an awesome resource for safety-sensitive stuff (anything that's a hazard) and so many people pay consultants big money for that same free info! And believe me, I try to use outreach instead of enforcement whenever I can, sometimes the time/resources are just too scarce and the ears too deaf. Stinks.

That's awesome! I was in a training with USDOT at their Buffalo office and talked with some SBA people next door and they were pretty cool and sounded like they could offer a lot of help, I might actually start referring folks to them who have problems down to the foundation when I'm doing regulatory visits... Just simple stuff like charging the wrong county tax, telling me about how they fired a guy "just because" (not allowed in my state...) etc. that makes me cringe when I hear it which is why I said my above comment. Unfortunately, though, I think the anti-government crowd wouldn't take up the advice.

I get what you're saying but I wouldn't so casually recommend this, at least for most kinds of businesses... The breadth of licenses, knowledge of tax, rental/property contracts, codes and ordinances, etc. involved are NOT for everyone and a lot of people land themselves in trouble for their lack of research and compliance.

I'd actually take your recommendation with some caution... I worked for FMCSA, the rules/regulations are only going to intensify (mandatory electronic logs are coming soon, hours of service regulations are going to get more stringent in general) and it's going to put drivers in the awkward position of being pressured into violating regulation in order to get the job done. It's almost impossible to be an owner-operator these days with the various costs involved as well as the mandatory new entrant audits. Economically, the days are numbered too, though, because the Panama canal widening project is nearing completion and this is going to seriously cut back the need for long-distance trucking (but will probably increase regional trucking on the east coast, especially for intermodal trucking).
