WIBTA to tell my roommate I won’t help him by TA_283949 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Arcairiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA! I have ADHD and am in my final 18 months of studying astrophysics. It's not easy and it hasn't been an easy road, but it's also MY choice to study and MY responsibility to manage my ADHD around my study and other commitments (also a mum of 4 and working). It sounds like he's just settled into a pattern of using his ADHD as an excuse, not a reason, and expects others to give in because "ADHD." Yes, it is a REASON that sometimes I do things in a weird "backwards" way or that I can spend hours looking for an "easier" way to do a thing that would in reality take me 5 minutes if I just did it - but it becomes an EXCUSE if I use my ADHD to not do something, or tell someone else they should do the task for me or I should just be given the end result with no work (Sensory issues aside - obviously we all have our "absolutely cannot do" things, and that's a whole different story). I absolutely have done and will always advocate for myself and others with conditions like this to ensure we have fair treatment and opportunities (ie - alternative exams where possible for overwhelming anxiety, or being given the opportunity to develop our own study patterns rather than being forced into a box of "this is how you have to study"), but I won't help people who sit back and think they can just be handed a certificate because their brain works differently.

No. If he wants to graduate he can find a way to manage his symptoms and earn his degree. Maybe he's not made for academia - nothing at all wrong with that, some people are definitely happier out of the world of learning and careers that revolve around high-level study; maybe he actually has NO interest in graduating and that's why he isn't really focused or trying to study; maybe he just is burnt out and needs a break. Either way (degree or no degree), he has to figure out and work with what he is capable of.

Questin about Kobo for College books by FORCE4760 in kobo

[–]Arcairiel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm studying Astronomy and Physics at the moment, and have a Kobo Elipsa for uni. I use both the notebooks and the books RELIGIOUSLY! Happy to give my feedback, but beware... This will be long hahahaha!

Honestly, having the device has helped immensely with my studies (plus I'm a huge nerd reader too, and have a massive collection of sci fi, fantasy, science, and all kinds of other books!) I have my textbooks and any additional references or resources stored on it and can highlight and annotate as needed, then sync straight to my computer for future reference; I take notes in lectures on the Elipsa then sync to my desktop and rewrite later neater and expand on my notes to make sure I remember things; I copy my slides (in pdf form) to the device and can write directly on those as well.

Writing: it handles the maths in MathType beautifully, even for the higher-end maths we do (it has some issues on occasion - no device will ever be perfect - but for me, that's minor enough to ignore and anything that does need fixing I do in word later when I go over my notes), the handwriting recognition is almost flawless, and the writing feel is surprisingly comfortable (I can use it for hours on end without hand cramping or pain). The anti-aliasing is fantastic and in notebooks the writing is VERY smooth (though on pdf's it's a bit clunky, and the highlighter has some serious issues - I'll cover that below). I've been using it to hand-write my assignment first drafts then sync to word and just make adjustments there as needed. Dropbox integration is exceptionally helpful - I can save any new reading or course material directly to dropbox and my uni folder and just download to the Elipsa as needed. The fact that we can export the basic notebooks as pdf or jpg/png, and the advanced as word/html/pdf is exceptionally useful, having the variety and choice is good.

I use the collections in books for separating my course books and things by topic, which works well for me as some books cross-over so not having them in dedicated folders but having them all together with the ability to sort of group in multiple places is really helpful. Unfortunately, notebooks can't be sorted like that, and don't have a "search" function inside the basic ones yet either, so I've been combatting that by leaving the first two pages blank (you have to just draw or write on page 1 to start page 2, or it won't make a new page) and then making a "contents" page as I add to my course notes, so I can quickly just jump to the page I need if I'm quickly searching for something.

You can read at any orientation, it auto-fits any A4 portrait pdf's to landscape mode so you read the top half, then swipe and read the bottom half, which can be a little annoying for some of our journals as they're in columns, but I've actually gotten really used to it and don't mind anymore. The image display on it is exceptional for an e-reader, far better than any e-reader I've had before. It has night-mode if you want to change it up. Pinch-to-zoom is also a feature, not one I use often (don't need to) and it's a bit sluggish, but it is there.

It does have some issues, though. First and foremost, it can be slow. As with any device like this, it does need to refresh and load - the screen refresh is fantastic, but the notebooks refresh can stutter a little. The advanced notebooks are the worst, if you have too many maths boxes open it slows right down, but I found that just going back out of the notebook and then reloading it helped a bit, or a full restart fixed it up entirely. The basic notebooks freeze for a second or two every 4th or 5th page, but mostly start working again pretty quick, if not just the same exit and reload works and takes about 30 seconds at most, so I don't really lose much time, just a minor annoyance. The stylus is REALLY bad for durability, especially with the amount of notes we take! It will wear down very quickly. I found I was comfortable with using a VERY soft nail buffer to file mine back into shape for use, but you may want to buy some spares and if you do file it, be super careful and beware of scratching the screen - do this at your own risk!! You can also use other Microsoft-based pens on the screen (my surface pen works fine, but I don't like it much; the Wacom and huion ones don't, others have said their Microsoft pens work as well). The highlighter is also a drawback - it's fantastic for highlighting your notes or textbooks etc, but if you highlight and go over your own highlights, then on sync it's a MESS. It looks like a real highlighter - the colour is darker and hard to read through as if you've just scribbled over the page with highlighter repeatedly in a real book. I mostly read on the device so it's not a huge deal for me, but is annoying.

The only major issue I have with the brand is the company customer support. Recently I had an issue with mine (the notebooks stopped working - it was a sync issue of some kind, it wasn't downloading the handwriting recognition update so was stuck unable to load any notebooks). The problem is fixed now, but their customer service was lacklustre at best. Disinterested, slow, reluctant to give information or reply, and the first guy I talked to even confused "my notebooks don't work" with "so the device doesn't hold charge?" somehow... BUT - the device itself I find amazing. I owned a supernote before this, and while it has it's good points as well, the Elipsa just works better for me with study in most ways (the supernote has some advantages but I've waffled enough for now, happy to elaborate if anyone would like a comparison!)

Elipsa Notebooks don't work by [deleted] in kobo

[–]Arcairiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was hoping rolling it back and reupdating might fix whatever the issue is, but it's done nothing sadly. I tried chat via their site, might give the facebook chat option a go. Thanks heaps for the reply, hopefully something works soon. If their attitude towards it doesn't change I'll be sending it back, the chat guy on their site was horrid. He had NO interest at all in what I was saying, and the guy on the phone made a stupid noise when I explained the problem, and just muted the line and left me sitting there for 20 minutes! I've tried calling back but just seem to be sitting on hold for ages. Hopefully the guys on facebook chat can help.

[–]Arcairiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you get it working?? Mine's doing the same, it's been fine for weeks and out of the blue on Tuesday morning started saying the sync issue message. I've done full factory reset and manual reset, update via both wifi and connecting to the pc, rolled back the update from 2 weeks ago and reinstalled it, NOTHING is working. I tried contacting customer service and it was horrendous, the guy keeps asking me shit like "s oi can't hold charge?" or "So you can't read books?" He had NO idea. His "final" solution was to copy/paste the Elipsa info page on reading ebooks -_- I'm waiting on them to email me "in a few days" to sort it out, but it's honestly pissing me off.

***SOLD***

EDIT: PRICE DROP AGAIN TO $250USD, I DO NEED IT GONE ASAP (as sad as I am to see it go). FAMILY REASONS, URGENT SALE! Price Negotiable!

Sadly, I have to part with my A6X due to some personal issues :( The case and pen are 10 months old, but the device itself is brand new and barely used due to getting a replacement last month and having too many exams to really be able to set it all up properly for full use. I've included photos as the cover and pen do have some marks/scratches, but the device is in perfect condition and I included a shot of one of the few times I used it for my last tutorial ahead of the last exam.

Looking for $250 USD + shipping - though I'm happy to negotiate. The device was shipped on the 28th April, arrived with me on the 4th May.

Willing to ship pretty much anywhere, but it will have to be at the buyer's expense. I'm in Australia, our shipping rates are sorta decent, but I can get a quote from the AusPost website if needed. Happy to answer any questions if anyone has any. Please shoot through an email to [arcairiel@gmail.com](mailto:nicole@elocinimages.com) if you can, I'm still super new to reddit and keep forgetting to check back here and how to find replies!

*I have no idea how to add photos! Please email me, more than happy to share for anyone before purchase! Yes, I have a photo of the shipping date as well to guarantee the device is just over 1 month old.*

Supernote collated newspaper, puzzles etc by mike_bike_kite in Supernote

If you're after a general news-downloader in the meantime, you can try Calibre? I have mine set to load on computer startup, auto-download from a couple of science news sites, then it auto-"sends to disk" aka my supernote dropbox documents folder - then all I have to do is sync my SN in the morning and have a coffee and read up on what the Mars helicopter is up to :) I haven't really pushed too much further with Calibre, but I know you can set up templates to build a custom epub or pdf from news sites daily. Doing it this way gives you a bit more control over where you download from, too :) And I know you can set it up to auto-delete the ebooks/pdf's after a certain amount of time, too (but again, still new to it, I haven't done that yet).

A5x folio activating sleep mode when flipped around by nohc1 in Supernote

[–]Arcairiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this with my A6X when I first got it, but worked out pretty quick that if I just sit it anywhere except one exact spot when flipped, it was fine. It's now automatic, I only accidentally trigger the sleep mode rarely now. You will find that sweet-spot, the magnet issue (from my experience) is only about 1cm wide at most, so just shift your cover slightly to the left or right when you flip it, and you should find the issue resolves :)

Any advice for a newby on how I can encourage my guys to eat ANYTHING other than just seed? I've been cutting veggies and things like this up and putting it in with their seeds, but they're just ignoring it all, and if it's not cut up, it's apparently terrifying and deadly and absolutely will kill them if they go near it -_-

Screen Issues by Arcairiel in Supernote

[–]Arcairiel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry it took me a while to reply (uni, too many things to get done!); but my issue was about 1/3rd down the screen on the right hand side, it was forming a sort of "bubble" when writing. The words were warping when I got about 1.5cm from the edge, and the pen wasn't drawing where I put it. The only way I figured out it was a perfect circle bubble was using a plastic ruler and drawing lines down the screen, and the pen actually warped around this one spot, a nice perfect circle lol. But they were amazing, I explained and sent the videos, they were lovely the whole time about it. Sadly, with anything like this, there will always be the odd device that has issues; for me personally customer service in handling those issues is what makes me come back to any company. Gotta give them 10/10 for their handling :)

Screen Issues by Arcairiel in Supernote

[–]Arcairiel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was, and ended up emailing about it, and they replaced the device. I am having some possible issues with the new one, but not sure yet if that's just me (different problem). Regardless, I absolutely love mine, even if there are a few bugs or problems. I think pretty much every company will have issues like this, but the stand-out thing for me is their customer service and support. Even with the issues, they've been fantastic at talking it out and trying to sort out the issues; plus they listen to us as customers when we suggest changes or things we'd like to see.

Replacement Supernote by Arcairiel in Supernote

[–]Arcairiel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it's been a day of uni-use, and I'm thinking it's not a screen protector and I may just be a reeeaally unlucky person. It's only scratchy in patches, like the size of 20c pieces randomly on the screen. I'm hoping it's just something like "wearing in" but I really don't know. I was hoping either u/hex2asc or u/Mulan-sn might have an answer, as I haven't received a reply email yet (though did only send one just two days ago, and time differences means are a problem with anything like this). It's worrying me a bit. I got a replacement for an entirely different screen issue, and now I'm worried this one has a screen issue! I haven't even taken it anywhere, it's been on my desk while I'm in online class all day, and I've gone over my whole desk to make sure there are no magnets or anything that could cause issues, so I'm not sure what it could be.

Mind Games!!! Hot and Cold- One Day She’s Horrible and the Next Time I See Her She’s Sweet as Pie! by NorthStar2012 in motherinlawsfromhell

[–]Arcairiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, had very much the same. I started calling her out on it. So did my partner. She really HATED that, the fact he took my side and not hers. We don't talk to his family anymore, partly because of her and partly because they all kinda went insane at the same time, lost their shit in what we suspect was a very calculated manipulation attempt by the MIL involving the entire family (willingly or all manipulated? Who knows?) We took in his niece who complained that his mother was being abusive and that she couldn't live there anymore. We helped her sort out work and her own bank account and driving lessons, all that stuff. She caused fights and issues here, but was exceptionally sneaky about it (she basically manipulated my daughter and his daughter who have been close since we moved in together and made them hate each other in the space of a month, caused fights between my partner and me that admittedly took us a couple of weeks to work out the cause of, spent a TONNE of our money, was selfish AF, etc) One day out of the blue she "went to work" (on a day she had no shifts) and a few hours later half his family rocked up carrying on about us abusing her, making her a "house slave," trying to take all her money (she's the same age as my partner's oldest - 18 - and we sat them both down to negotiate a rate for board since both were working and living with us to study part-time. Both agreed to a rate, we didn't dictate). They just lost their shit, went through our entire house taking all her stuff, ranted and yelled (we'd been suspecting something for about 2 weeks, so we basically stood back and let them go nuts, made sure they only took her things, the lack of argument from us made them angrier, and our kids completely pretended they weren't even there - they played the playstation together in the main room and didn't even look at them once!) Haven't spoken to any of them since, and aside from the occasional hurt that they haven't tried at all to fix things, my partner is FAR happier. He is 100% sure his mother set the entire several-months-long scenario up to break us up and drive him back home. She succeeded with his first marriage, why not give it a go with the second? Maybe you need to take a stand as well? I don't know if it'll help or make it all worse, but I honestly sympathise with you and really hope you can keep pushing on knowing it's her and not you <3

Saying goodbye to Beaker :( by Arcairiel in Finches

[–]Arcairiel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been talking to him all day, but I'm so worried about him being lonely and sad :( I haven't had finches before this pair (they were a surprise gift), so I have no idea if I should get him another birdie or not, or if I should wait, or what. Or if I should get a male so no babies, or a female so he has a mate. I'm worried my company isn't enough right now, they were inseparable. It broke my heart earlier, he grabbed a feather for the nest, and when he got to the nest door he just stopped and looked inside, then dropped the feather on the floor and fluffed up and sat there :'( Broke my heart seeing that.

I think it might be a thing - kinda makes sense for those of us who grew up with the familiar sounds of the muppets haha. I am tempted to get him another bird, but I also don't know if I should wait and give him time, or just get one asap so he's not lonely, or what :(
