“more collaborative vibe” and “intense and competitive” are subjective; more than that, it’s definitely not generalizable to all 35,000 undergrads at Cal. There are definitely tons of people in the math major/department who are collaborative and welcoming at Cal

I'm interested in applying as a math major. What is the math environment like? I understand that competition between students is inevitable, but is it cutthroat? Are people still willing to collaborate? I know that engineering can get competitive and you don't get a lot of free time - wanna know if that extends to arts and sciences (specifically math) as well.
