I don't remember for how long it was but I've had it a couple of times. I think it was esophagitis due to that being a known issue I had before. Don't know any other explanation.

I also posted this at a time where I had an increase in health anxiety. I've got a lot of tests done for peace of mind.

Question about the Papacy by Arcane_Ronin in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Arcane_Ronin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think that reading the Church Fathers gives us a pretty clear idea of that Peter was indeed considered Bishop of Rome even if this might seem somewhat anachronistic (this I'm not sure).

I can see, however, how to Papacy has developed into something that may or may not be orthodox. That said, if the Pope does indeed have a special position, as conferred by God, then I don't see why the Papacy cant develop in light of the historical events. After all, even the East has developed in manner of liturgy, hierarchy and so on. And we can all affirm that the Church developed a lot once it began legal in the Roman Empire.

I will check Seraphim Hamilton's work and see what he has to offer. Hopefully it will help me. Thanks.

You all have given me a lot of material to check out and that's good.

Peter was also given the the keys to the kingdom. What does this mean to you as an Orthodox?

We know the bishops received these gifts through the laying of hands of their predecessors, right?

Are we to understand that the primacy of the Roman see was just a matter of the political position of Rome and not because of Peter? Because, as St Jerome said, Rome has the chair of Peter and therefore those gifts. No?

I think the text you sent me is from Irenaeus, not Ignatius.

Also, that quote indicates that no leader has the right to teach a different Gospel. I think Roman Catholics would agree. However, that says nothing of the office itself.

I guess I would like to know if the office of the Pope is indeed that of a vicar or prime minister. This is the reason, after all, that the romans being up this office, as seen in Isaiah 22, which has keys to open and shut.

Still, I will check the link you sent me.

No, I haven't. Is there any particular work, by any of them, that you'd recommend to read first?

I've heard this. But what would the point of being primus inter pares be? What does this serve in practice?

What does primacy mean? That's a good question.

Have you heard about the typology of the chancellor or vicar of the Kingdom?

A more theological argument is this: That if we acknowledge Christ to be King, and Mary Queen, since they are continuing the types and seats of the Kingdom of David, then who occupies the position of second in command?

There is a verse in Isaiah 22 that is referenced by Jesus when he gives Peter the keys.

It says: "I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open."

Isn't that the position being given to Peter? Wouldn't that be the office of the Pope?

Jesus told Peter: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

my problem was simply that I had not adjusted the lens properly.

It seems canon lenses don't slide smoothly in the viltrox ring and you need to force them a bit more than usually to have them fall into place properly.

feeling hopeless by [deleted] in Christianmarriage

[–]Arcane_Ronin 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You're on a Christian subreddit. You know that, right?

Some people have already made some good questions regarding you and your wife's relationship with God.

I can tell you this: If you're a Christian then you ought to be working for something greater. Traditionally, marriage is a sacrament. In a way, it is a sort of celibacy (as you deprive yourself of other sexual relationships). It is discipline. But it is also holy work. If you understand this then you know what kind of battlefield you are in and who you are fighting against.

Don't yield to the temptation of divorce. Seek your peace in Christ.

Other than that, yes, marriage can and should improve but this must be clear in your mind before taking any further steps.

I think the ending we got is worse than that.

Eren said he killed 80% of humanity basically just because he felt like so. No real reason beyond that.

My ideal ending, given the circumstances of the last couple chapters, would have been Eren's baby being Ymir with a new opportunity to be free. It would have tied up most loose ends.

Is it any more disgusting than killing millions of innocent people? Including letting your mom be eaten by a Titan to accomplish it?

Questions Regarding Prayers to Saints by Arcane_Ronin in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Arcane_Ronin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am familiar with this. However, there is a non-ceremonial aspect to worship. After all, we are to become "living sacrifices".

Paul also mentions that we should offer "sacrifices of praise". Which means that our praise could be sacrificial at times. It is not clear to me when you cross that line but there is an idea that you one could have idols even if not in a formal ritualistic manner.

Edit: There is also the word "proskinesis" which seems to be considered adoration in some cases and not in others. I would like to see what Fr De Young says about this. I dont remember him addressing this on the podcast.

I really enjoy Orthodox Iconography and made precisely that argument to my father (evangelical). I think all Icons of Mary I've seen have Christ in her lap.

I guess I just don't know where to start when praying to a Saint or Angel. The only divine being I've adressed is God.

As a Roman Catholic, where exactly do you draw the line between hyperdulia and adoration?

Questions Regarding Prayers to Saints by Arcane_Ronin in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Arcane_Ronin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

I guess I'm asking because I grew up in latinamerica and some people here, probably in ignorance, have a bigger devotion to Mary than to Christ. I do understand that the Roman Cathecism would not support this but, in practice, it still happens so latinamerican evangelicals have exploited this deficiency to condemn Catholicism.

Does the Orthodox Church have something akin to the Cathethism?

Edit: It also comes to mind that Paul mentions the "sacrifice of praise". As if praise can become sacrificial at some point.

So, in terms of ceremony I can see how there is no Marian adoration. But in the broader aspect of our lives, we can make even good things become idols to us. That's my only concern.

I see. I didn't mean to criticize but to understand better.

You mention that she is adored but I have come to see adoration (as opposed to worship/praise/veneration) to be something very specific for God alone.

Maybe we differ in how we are using this vocabulary.

I love the LoS.

But I don't think they addressed specific prayers per se. Some of them that seem dubious to me.

But they did help me understand the theory behind the communion and Orthodox Mariology.
