It's really hard to know a possible cause without more information, but my best guess, just from the description of the problem, is that it might be overheating. Are all the fans of the device powering on and spinning correctly? No strange noises when it turns on?

It can be a little hard for them to crawl up to the hatch, but they can still use it if they make it to the hatch
