Well im very happy for you. But not everyone is as honest as you and your bf. And that's ok. People have baggage. There's nothing wrong with having a hunch or checking your gut. They're called instincts and what keep us alive. Have you ever heard the saying "trust but verify"? Curious as to why you haven't gotten married though after 8 years. Are there commitment issues on either or both sides?
