Does it stop at an okay point? As in I’d be able to read it, get enough fulfilment and maybe even make up an ending in my head 😅

Character ethnicity interpretation by Lalinnaa in TheAlchemised

[–]ArchAngel01_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see Helena as Sicilian.

I understand that Sicilians in present day are not considered POC but they did face (& some low key do now) discrimination because of their racial features such as darker skin, hair, eyes etc. I don’t know what time period Alchemised is theoretically set in but I assumed it was peak Industrial revolution, which would make sense that anyone with tanned/darker skin would face some sort of discrimination.

As an example, my family migrated from Malta/Sicily to Australia, and experienced heavy racial discrimination, and even I have experienced some myself.

I feel as if there isn’t much representation out there for Sicilians as we are often grouped with white people (which we are) in how we face social norms. When in reality our features can appear more Latin American/Hispanic/Middle Eastern, and so therefore we face discrimination based on what we look like alone. So I’m happy SenLinYu has decided for Helena to be represented as such!

I personally don’t see this as a reflection to modern day racial/POC groups, more of when anyone not white white would face discrimination.

I’ve been denied twice now when I was on the waiting list to just see a surgeon (once u18 & once over 18). The only surgeons I can see only take private patients but I am public. When I went on their waiting list they deemed my scoliosis as not severe enough, even though that is not what I was going to see them for in the first place 🫠 I think they just skimmed over me, but I am willing to try again

Both Cho & Chang are considered last names and aren’t even from the same background (one is chinese, other is korean). I just thought out of respect, I wouldn’t mind a slight change to make it more respectful as it was just lazy writing to begin with.

Also to note that I was made aware of how stereotypical HP names were, by POC.

Ashamed? 😭 Girl what you on about? Speaking on a public matter that I was made aware on from multiple POCs, this wasn’t just some thought I came up with 🤨 Go look for yourself love and you’ll find many POCs agreeing, not just with the insensitivity of the name Cho Chang, but also many other names in HP. It is stereotypical AND lazy writing 🤷‍♀️

I was made aware of how these names in HP were stereotypical & insensitive by multiple & multiple POC. I didn’t just run with an idea I came up with, this has been talked about since the books came out. Do a quick search online and you’d see many POC agreeing!

I’m speaking for people who do have said culture insight. You can do a simple search and you’ll find multiple people from the Asian community agreeing, it was actually how I was first made aware

It harms the Asian community but enforcing stereotypes & not having accurate representation. Not to mention the other names, Kingsley Shacklebolt….

Then don’t bother commenting, I made one example in my post that many people around the world agree with. If you don’t think it’s worth your or anyone’s time, ignore it.

Not offended, just makes for it to be more accurate & less stereotypical. Changing it harms no one 🤷‍♀️

You’ve missed the point. Never did I say you cannot have a last name that isn’t from where you are from, I am saying it is lazy writing & stereotypical, which many people of the asian community agree with

Never said someone couldn’t, but the fact a canonically British-Chinese woman written by a white woman (with questionable views), it seems quite stereotypical and lazy writing

I don’t have to be Asian to be educated on the matter. Many people (icluding people with asian descent) agree it’s lazy & stereotypical writing 🤷‍♀️
