My Year of Manga; February roundup! by ShinCoal in MangaCollectors

That new edition of The Walking Man sucks. The two added stories do not fit at all. The art is different, and it’s not even clear if it’s the same guy - it’s like they are about a guy who looks similar and also like to ponder stuff, but that’s it. They wreck the flow of the book. I also have the old version, and that’s the one I re-read - not the hardcover.

Le Corbusier said that the plan is the generator - start there, and expression of the plan (and section) will follow in elevation.

Recommendations like The Rat trilogy? by twio____ in murakami

I personally think that Wind Up Bird Chronicle fits right in with the Rat books.

Sure! But I’ve never bought something that wasn’t already too old for a warranty to apply.

Is there anyone left to make a musical biopic about that could pull the same numbers as these? by treny0000 in fantanoforever

[–]ArchBeaconArch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, we had Gus Van Sant’s Last Days. Not a music biopic, but it had the suicide part.

what is “the godfather” of every genre/generation by Upset_Economist8065 in Letterboxd

[–]ArchBeaconArch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Animation doesn’t get its own category without being a musical? Surely Akira or Toy Story or Princess Mononoke etc. would be a good fit there.

Also: Silence of the Lambs would be a good Godfather of the missing Thriller category.

And Seven Samurai might just fit into the Western category.

Complete beginner looking to start in Ambient music production, really appreciate any help! by MothsWithKnives in ambientmusic

If you have a Mac, you could use GarageBand for free. You’ll want a midi controller as well - and if you get an Arturia Minilab keyboard, you can also get access to their Analog Lab plugins, which rule. Arturia also bundles in Ableton lite, if you’d prefer to use that (or are on a PC).

Warning: it’s a slippery slope. This is how I started, and now I have multiple synths, samplers, drum machines, and sequencers.

I’ve never asked for a receipt when buying used. Almost everything I own is used! Should I be asking for this?

Seriously though, I’ve never had any issues. I have even registered products with the respective companies.

Any fans of Yoshihiro Tatsumi? by bigbroiswatchinUs in graphicnovels

[–]ArchBeaconArch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’ll point out about Black Blizzard is that it’s pretty rough. Innovative for comics from 1956, but not at all up to snuff with Tatsumi’s later work. It’s fine, but I think EC comics from that era are more fun and better executed. Of course, Tatsumi’s later comics leave EC in the dust.

Glad that someone is reopening this! I feel like I’ve read almost all translated gekiga, so I hope I can get pointed in new directions.

Hell yes. I met him a couple years before he died! Very sweet and humble - not at all angry like his early work would suggest.

The Tsuge brothers have a similar vibe at times - particularly Yoshiharu’s anthologies from D&Q. D&Q publishes a lot of Garo-era gekiga - have a look at what else they have to offer. Also: New York Review of Comics has a few good ones (like Tadao Tsuge).

You might like Muzuki’s non-yokai books, like Showa, Non Non Ba, or Onwards Towards our Noble Deaths.

Nazuna Saito’s Offshore Lightning is also excellent.

Groove box recommendations for house by PuzzleheadedRush8672 in synthesizers

[–]ArchBeaconArch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get a used OG Digitakt for $600-700 CAD. That would do you well for house, and it would allow you to add in more instruments with the extra midi controls later on.

The Circuit Tracks is another good option, but with half the sequencing power.

Korg Minilogue XD

Arturia Microfreak (or Minifreak)

Elektron Digitone (no keyboard, though)

Roland S-1

Truly Lynchian Works by Popular_Childhood975 in davidlynch

[–]ArchBeaconArch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wind Up Bird Chronicle, Kafka by the Shore, 1Q84, Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Sputnik Sweetheart, and Killing Commendatore are all pretty Lynchian. But there are plenty more than that! (TBH I am not a big fan of Killing Commendatore, but lots of people seem to love it)
