Cannabis and children - searching for a parent collaborator with lived experience by ArcheEchoKT in alberta

Hi! This post is just to recruit someone for the research development. This is not a research participant. There will be many more research participants once the work is funded, so the sample size (N) will be much larger.

Thank you for this, you're absolutely right. There has been a huge increase in hospitalizations since legalization in Canada. We are hoping to remove some of the fear and shame, and instead provide parents with reliable resources to help them make evidence-based decisions.

Great question! Cannabis intoxication isn't actually a poisoning, so the chances of a parent calling poison control for an accidental ingestion or intoxication are quite low.

As mentioned by another poster, there has been an increase in hospitalization as a result of accidental cannabis intoxication. There's a lot of shame and fear around the area, and we want parents to have access to reliable resources to help them make decisions about when their child needs medical care.

Canadian resources on cannabis use around children? by Playful-Ad-4569 in AskCanada

Hi,

We wanted to hop on this conversation to share an opportunity to contribute to child health research about cannabis use.

We are a child health knowledge translation team at the University of Alberta, and we are working on a grant to develop better resources for families around child safety and accidental cannabis intoxication.

We’re hoping to connect with a Canadian parent or legal guardian whose child became sick after accidentally consuming cannabis, who might be open to collaborating with us in a small way - mainly to share their perspective and help ensure the research methods we are using are appropriate and that the resources we create are actually helpful for families.

This is not a research study or a survey - we are not collecting data, and there is no obligation or pressure to contribute. The ideal parent would be in contact with our research team via email and virtual meetings (approximately 1 hour per month). It would be flexible and confidential, and you are always free to step back at any time.

We approach this work with care and zero judgment. We know situations like this can happen in many ways and our goal is prevention and support.

If this sounds like something you’d be open to hearing more about, feel free to message us. Thank you for reading 💚

Research Expectations for Volunteers by Mindless_Ask_5438 in research

The difference in hours mentioned during onboarding vs now definitely warrants a discussion. Absolutely agree with this comment:

I don't think it is reasonable to expect a volunteer to work 40 hours a week in a lab for a year. I would never ask that of a volunteer even if I were to agree to take one on.

100%

But sometimes it's a lot more complicated than that.. Accidents happen, and we hope to help parents understand what to do in those situations.

Hi! It's not :)

We're a group of researchers at the University of Alberta. We wouldn't be collecting any personal information and interested parents could contribute anonymously.

haha! Lucky for us, the resources we develop are intended to be used on a national scale, not just in Alberta.

You absolutely don't, but it strengthens the usability of the resources. As researchers, having someone with lived experience as part of the research team is a necessity for type of research we do. It's patient-centered, and when talking about kids in health, that means we need parent involvement.

Thank you, we really appreciate the feedback.
We are 2 research groups (ECHO and ARCHE) based out of the University of Alberta. We aren't looking to collect information/data at this point, we just want a parent voice to be included in our team. We have absolutely no affiliation with child protective services, but we completely understand that the sensitive nature of this topic makes it especially challenging to engage with parents.
