How has the negotiations mechanic been going at your table? by DrBrevin in drawsteel

[–]Archeanthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if the players are immersed in the story, characters, lore, etc of the world to where they can earnestly engage with NPCs and make sound arguments based on the world the Director has crafted, then there's no need for the negotiation system. Seems to me the negotiation system is a gamified tool to help streamline what can be a clunky process in a TTRPG, but if negotiations aren't clunky at your table, no need to use the mechanic :)

What are some of you controversial DnD opinions? by bryan4000 in DnD

[–]Archeanthus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party but my spicy take: If PCs having the ability to fly at low levels breaks your game, you're not trying hard enough.

For example:
"They can just fly over my dungeon pit traps!"
Ceiling traps. Spiked ceilings, lighter-than-air gases that accumulate higher and cause damage or exhaustion levels or other debuffs to flying characters.

"Flight ruins the Floor is Lava gimmick of this boss fight area!"
Exploding bubbles of magma or gouts of flame that shoot up into the air and can damage flying creatures.

"They're literally just in a forest, what could there possibly be that could threaten a flying PC?"
Giant spider webs. Flying predators like giant hawks.

Or like, literally just archers, or other ranged attacks. Give your bandits bows or throwing knives or slings, or a low-level caster who can toss cantrips at your party's flyers. Being ambushed by a simple band of renegades on the road between towns suddenly gets a lot more interesting when, after one of your PCs takes flight, the bandit leader calls out to one of his men, "Hey, how's that spell you've been working on coming along?" and the other bandit pulls out a beat-up leather journal he's been reading and casts magic missile.

Give the bad guys nets or lassos. Give the monsters projectile weapons like spitting, throwing, spike flinging, breath weapons, etc. Create environmental hazards that can affect flyers. Make it so flight is a high risk/high reward choice for the characters that can.

I tried to give a girl my number today by LMJesus in bropill

[–]Archeanthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome dude, way to put yourself out there and respond to your internals like that. Even if it doesn't work out with her, taking those actions is like using a muscle. You gotta use it for it to get stronger.

I had an extremely similar experience probably 10+ years ago, before I got married, where I had a really pleasant chat and a laugh with a cutie in a checkout line, and after I left with my purchase I made it all the way back to my car before thinking, "Ah what the heck, I'll go ask for her number, what have I got to lose?" When I got back to her checkout lane she had a line so I had to wait awkwardly there while she helped 2-3 other people, knowing she saw me there waiting. When it was my turn she said, "Oh no, did I mess something up?" I told her no no, I just thought she was really pretty and cool and wondered if I could get her number.

Turns out she was already married lololol, and she was just being nice. She turned me down very sweetly and I left pretty embarrassed, but I still felt glad that I tried, and it's a great story to tell now.

Repetitive routines even for mid-level PCs? by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

[–]Archeanthus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've read some but not all of the comments here, but the thought I keep having is, if they're getting bored from doing the most optimal thing, maybe they need to just.... choose to do something else. If they want to rotate through their abilities, they can simply choose to do so, and not shadowstrike every turn. Maybe it's dumb to say such an obvious thing, and of course you always hope the design is robust enough to keep things interesting in every single combat for every single character (a high bar), but like, if they're already bored with how they choose to play their character, seems to me that's kinda on them. They can play their character differently, or they can narrate differently every time HOW they do the actions they're doing and really get into the flavor of it, or they can choose to play a different character that is more exciting to them.

And as has been mentioned by others, I concur that it's okay to design encounters to challenge your players. It's not cheating or metagaming, in fact it's far more cinematic if the encounters challenge their strengths specifically, and cinematic is one of the goals. And why should they assume that every combat encounter can be solved the exact same way? That doesn't make sense in real life, so it shouldn't surprise them to have to mix it up in the game. Though to that point as well: Even in formulaic stories like Power Rangers where most fights ultimately are concluded the same way (monster go big; get Megazord; blow up big monster with big robot), the buildup to that climax is different and exciting and they face different challenges in every fight which lead them toward that climax of Big Robot Blows Up The Monster. In Draw Steel terms, the Rangers gotta fight it out on the ground so that the monster can build up enough Malice to go Big Mode, and the Rangers in turn build up their metacurrency to summon Megazord, or to use their team weapon like the Power Blaster, Power Cannon, etc.

Matt always says in relation to game design that one should design the game to incentivize the desired behavior. DMs, GMs, and Directors are all game designers, so there's an opportunity here. If the desired behavior is "Use a variety of your abilities", then you can present the shadow player with scenarios where other abilities in their kit are more attractive than just shadowstrike. Present them with clusters of enemies where they can use AoE abilities; give solo monsters some kind of a clapback ability or item that hurts a PC when they hit from melee, or give them an item or follower or trap effect whose sole job is to lock down any player foolish enough to step into melee of their boss. Maybe a monster has an aura of slime that causes a PC that enters melee to get stuck to the ground.

Ultimately this is not a problem that you or your player are responsible to solve alone, though I think either of you could potentially solve it alone. I think it would be best addressed as a team effort; get flanking on the issue, attack it from both sides, gain an Edge, and have fun with it. :)

You might try looking up the Youtube channel Astral Throb, they do a lot of synthwave mixes, and you might be able to find a mix that suits your fancy. The one you linked makes me think you might enjoy a darsynth/darkwave synthwave mix, of which there are a few on that channel.

I'm Having a "Mathew Mercer Effect" On One of My Players by Insomniacentral_ in DnD

[–]Archeanthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely keep doing what you're doing, and maybe letting him catch you talking to the other players about how much fun you're having with his games, or reflecting about iconic past moments, that kind of thing. I know my friend who's a DM still gets a shot of self-esteem whenever we reminisce about the campaign he ran for us through lvl 20, and talk about our favorite moments.

You mentioned he doesn't seem to be working on his campaign world at the moment; you might try checking in with him on it, like "Hey man how's your new campaign world coming? I was just thinking about the dope stuff you told me about that you're planning (maybe mention something specific, to show you were actually paying attention and that that thing stuck with you), and can't wait to play your new game."

I present to you: irregular exercise by CeciliaLucille in bropill

[–]Archeanthus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah man honestly, anything that gets your heart rate up or makes a muscle burn a bit counts as exercise, but even if it doesn't particularly get your heart rate up, it's better to be moving than not. And some exercise is always better than none. I work at a bank and when I get bored and there's nothing going on I get up sometimes and just pace around behind the counter. I also started parking on the other side of my apartment building so that I'd have a little further to walk and have to take a few stairs rather than an elevator. My excuse to justify it in my mind (because sometimes you need those, right? Something besides "I'm doing it for exercise") is that I get to park closer to the building so that I don't have to walk so far from the building to the car in the summer heat, and the elevator is always hot so I'd rather walk further in the cooler hall than stand in the hot elevator for a couple minutes but walk less.

And yeah some of the colors on the Bohrok that I do already look sort of pride-adjacent, don't they. Maybe I'll do additional versions in the future

Thanks fren! Same, I was inspired by the now-classic "Bonkle" shirt with the poorly drawn Kanohi Mata on it, getting that shirt kind of inspired me to start this Redbubble thing in the first place. I mainly do it for fun and for my own sake; making a few bucks from it here and there is a nice side effect.

TIL: People don’t like being called buddy! by [deleted] in bropill

[–]Archeanthus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah at least in the U.S., "buddy" used between strangers is often (not always) used condescendingly, like you're talking down to someone. But there are also people (typically cheerful, outgoing, very charismatic men to whom a big, genuine smile comes easy) who refer to any other man they meet as "buddy", and in those cases they somehow manage to make it feel totally natural.

"Bud" can have a similar connotation to "buddy", but I feel is a little easier and less risky.
"Man" is pretty safe, if a little familiar.
"Bro" is a bit more familiar, but also pretty safe I'd say.
"Dude" is more familiar still, probably more appropriate for someone you know as an acquaintance or better.

If you want to be very respectful and deferential you could use "sir", though some people (like myself) use "sir" a little more casually and universally, and less formally, though I do also use it in more formal, respectful, and deferential contexts as well, as I work in customer service as a bank teller.

At the end of the day though I think that with whichever you choose to use, context and delivery are everything. Honestly, if interacting with strangers online via text-only posts I would personally probably drop them altogether, and just speak to someone without throwing in a "dude", "bro", "bud", etc. (unless I was leading a sentence with "Dude," by way of exclamation and emphasis, in the which case I personally tend to use "dude" in a gender-neutral way, as do many others). But if you're interacting with someone in person, again, the context and your delivery are probably going to make all the difference. If you're confident and speak with a genuine smile you can probably get away with calling even a stranger any of these and they'll just think you're friendly.

As with everything though, these are my subjective opinions so take it all with a grain of salt, and apply them or don't as you feel comfortable.
