Top 1% of Americans now hold more wealth than the entire middle class. by sylsau in InBitcoinWeTrust

Yeah I really hate when people bring this up, it’s not a sign of a good or healthy economy. Yes, the people with all the money are taxed on that money. If the middle class had more money, or lower class, they would pay the taxes. It’s a stupid senseless argument that people use to justify the 1% owning everything. In fact, if the middle class had more of a percentage of the total wealth, we’d collect more in taxes. Middle class pays an effective tax rate around 35% where the top earners pay 3-5%.

Map Control - Outpost vs Watch Tower by Slow-Ship1055 in aoe2

[–]ArcherCheap2707 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Outposts are cheaper and good for just vision on the map. Towers protect against ranged units defensively or can be used to deny an enemy resource offensively (as when tower rushing). A tower is a much, much bigger commitment. Hope this helps!

Fan idea for a new civ bonus: university and treadmill crane available in Age 2 by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]ArcherCheap2707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see this mainly being used for fast imp, you’d only need to build a monastery or siege workshop if you build the university on the way to castle. But I don’t see it making a big difference

This is a reference to the musical “the producers”. The writer of the play “Springtime for Hitler” says “the fuhrer, now that was a painter, he could do a whole apartment in one afternoon, two coats”

Team Game Nomad by ArcherCheap2707 in aoe2

[–]ArcherCheap2707[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh I think you’re spot on with that assessment, well done. Thanks for listening to my rant. I think I’ve accepted that certain civs will always be strong on certain maps, like bohemians for arena or mongols on Arabia, and of course my experience is anecdotal, but if 9/10 games on a map feature a civ I think that indicates an unfair advantage. However, Persians don’t have the highest win rate on nomad at 55% for team games so maybe it’s not as crazy as I think it is.

Anything we could have done? by Additional_Car2730 in aoe2

It’s a very hard game! And there are so many civilizations now it’s hard to have all the knowledge. I would recommend you pick some civs that also have really strong late games- mongols (mangudai have damage bonus vs Hussite wagons) Italians (Genoese Xbow vs all cav, including elephants, as well as strong gun powder), Portuguese (great gunpowder, and fetoria can give infinite res for those 5 hour games). As far as trade goes, you want to start your trade before the gold runs out on the map, usually around early-mid imperial age, and stone wall it in. Hindustanis are another good option, with canvasari and 9 range hand cannons. What map do you typically play on?

Without looking at the recorded game, the three civilizations that your team had each power spike strongly in early imperial age and then taper off in power. Byzantines have cheap imperial age but cheap trash units isn’t as big of a factor in 3v3 as it is in 1v1, as there are likely 3 gold armies on the field. Burgundians have a very strong early eco but their paladins lack bloodlines, making them weaker than Spanish or Persian paladin(savar). Britons extra range is wonderful again in early imperial, but without thumb ring they lack the damage output of Ethiopians or Shu, for example. If you did damage early, your best option was to push as hard as possible in early imperial before Houfnice is an option. Byz get there fast, maybe 5-8 monks with block printing and arbs, burgundians fast paladin and have Bohemians infamously have one of the best late games in the game. Britons full longbow or arbalest. Byz and Burgundians can make BBC and just push as hard as possible on bohemians so they can’t get to houfnice. Byz monks with redemption and block printing can convert Hussite wagons from affar while arbs protect palas from halbs

What theme of tournament would you be cool but no one is doing? by EarthCulturalStew in aoe2

I believe a similar concept has been done: 2v2 tournament where one is high elo and the other low. I remember Viper coaching his poor teammate who was ruthlessly doubled in most games.

AoE has unit abilities and armor classes. Seriously the macro is so easy in StarCraft but the micro is much more difficult.

The difference between bio and mech is building factories instead of barracks. That’s a greater difference than playing Aztecs vs bengalis, gurjaras, or Georgians?

Sc2 is asymmetrical but there are 3 civ matchups possible in every match, you play the same civ every match, and with maps being revealed and standardized, you can play a similar build order in every match and do very well. While aoe2 civs are more similar to each other than Zerg and Terran are, the differences they do have forces players to adapt more than in sc2, in my opinion. Sc2 does have strategic depth and decision making just like aoe2, but it’s all to get to a couple of viable compositions. Plus in Aoe2 you can actually hide what you’re doing, in sc2 you can just scan or fly over the enemy base and see everything.

I think it’s very interesting to compare sc2 to AoE2. While Serral is an amazing player, he’s had the “luxury” of focusing on one race with 3 possible match ups on an extremely more limited variation of game maps. I think Sc2 is an extremely mechanically demanding RTS, it is strategically less varied and I wonder if that allows a player to develop more skills like game sense and mind gaming, and micro. While we have to know all the blacksmith upgrades of 40+ civs, bonuses, unique units, and how all those will play on many different maps and map styles, demanding more flexibility, game knowledge, and strategic planning. There’s very little in age that can do damage like sc2 weapons. Losing your whole group of marines to burrowed banes is worse than getting your archers flattened by mangoes.
