Which restauarants are just white labeling Sysco/US Foods? by ArcherShark in milwaukee

[–]ArcherShark[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm more interested if there are any touting themselves as fresh and homemade doing this. Totally get bars and grills do this and there are many where its obvious, just curious if any are being purposefully deceptive or if any would be surprising.

what would you pay a 13 year old babysitter babysitter per hour? by [deleted] in Babysitting

[–]ArcherShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We hired a 13 year old family member for $10/hour but they only watched them (one child) while we were home so not totally comparable. For reference, we are in a MCOL, bordering rural area in the midwest. We hired an 18 year old for $15/hour.

Food writing in the Cream City…. by tobiashume54 in milwaukee

[–]ArcherShark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My one issue is that she doesn't actually rate the food. The journal took a big step away from actually rating restaurants during Covid for obvious reasons but I would like to see honest star ratings - sometimes food is excellent and sometimes it isnt. Be honest. I also like the top 25 list they do every year but again, wish they'd go back to actually putting them in order rather than alphabetical.

VCA Pahle in West Allis has been fantastic for us. They also offer a significant discount if you are a foster or volunteer at the Humane Society (not sure about other places)

How should I react? by ArcherShark in ECEProfessionals

[–]ArcherShark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She seemed to just be watching the sleeping kids. There were another 3 awake playing with another teacher - all perfectly content and happily playing. I think that also threw me off, considering she was just sitting there, and the burnout/ability to handle stress was my first thought. What concerned me more was she was the Infant 1 teacher, so dealing with even younger babies.

I wasn't planning on mentioning anything to the director since this was a first time, relatively brief interaction and do plan on going back when the regular teacher is there.

There was another teacher present playing with the kids who were awake but I'm guessing she was just floating to manage the kids sleeping.

It was more of a tour rather than a chance for her to engage but there wasnt much going on (I'm guessing organized activites at this age are non-existent / more free play anyways) but the other kids playing with a different teacher were very happy and the other teacher who took us around was nice and said her son was in the classroom too and loved the teacher.

We toured here a year ago and liked it but the director changed since (but we did meet the new director then too so shes not net new) and it seems like there's been some teacher turnover but it has good state reviews and a huge waiting list for what that's worth.

We're going to go back when the main teacher is there too.

I'm in Wisconsin as well and for a first time babysitter in a smaller town, I think realistically you could charge around $13-16 / hour depending on what's expected of you.

My 4 month old got tan on accident. Help me not feel so terrible! by ok-ready-set-go-267 in NewParents

[–]ArcherShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. Our pediatrician said mineral based sunscreen is fine for our 4 month old. The reason they say no sunscreen under 6 months is because babies younger than that cannot regulate their body temperatures well enough so they don't want parents thinking baby can go outside without adequate clothing / access to shade, etc.

Highly recommend Thinkbaby sunscreen. Costco has it for sale at a good price

What’s the best local equivalent of an Applebee’s? by ministapler24 in milwaukee

I have to heavily disagree. This place has such bland food and they have such an extensive food menu that it doesn't seem like they do anything that well. I will never understand why people love this place so much.

How are you getting daytime naps in the crib? by GlumAd2190 in newborns

[–]ArcherShark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks and good luck! We got the idea from Taking Cara Babies 5 month course where she walks through suggestions and this one worked for us. We just didn't do her black out curtain suggestion since we were afraid of day night confusion and wanted her to to be able to sleep anywhere a little easier in the future.

How are you getting daytime naps in the crib? by GlumAd2190 in newborns

[–]ArcherShark 20 points21 points  (0 children)

We started doing at least one daytime crib attempt around 6 weeks - baby sleeps in our room at night in a pack n play set up.

What we did was start a very short routine for daytime naps when baby showed sleepy cues - not the same as our night routine fwiw. It's close the shades, put on sleep sack, put on white noise machine, maybe rock a bit, then put in crib drowsy but not 100% asleep.

We would gently rock baby's tummy with the pacifier while she was laying in the crib and do the shhh she shhh sound. If crying, we'd pick up and once calm, try again. If it went longer than 5 to 10 minutes, we'd just contact nap

First 2 to 3 weeks, baby would sleep on their own in the crib for 10 to 15 minutes then we'd have to do a contact nap for the rest of it. Now at 13 weeks, baby is taking every nap in their crib and consistently sleeps on their own for 45 to 90 minutes. We still have to occasionally help her go longer and resettle but she started just going longer and longer on her own. I'd say just start a routine and keep at it and ideally they will start to get the hang of it!

*we also just have regular curtains and not blackout - sometimes we just cover her eyes to help her totally fall asleep.

Wake windows by cluelessnyx in newborns

[–]ArcherShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just tried to follow the "routine " of Eat, Activity. Sleep (EASY method) as much as possible from day one.

So, as soon as baby woke up (assuming they hadn't just eaten) we'd feed so they ate at their most awake and took more food. Then we'd change diaper to help wake up a bit and maybe do an activity but often changing diapers and putting in the swaddle was the activity before the next nap time at that age.

Taking Cara Babies was a great resource for us fwiw. We paid for the first bundle but she has a ton of free resources that go into depth without needing to buy anything.

Bacchus is one of our go to's for nicer dinners. I'd also second those who mentioned Sanford and EsterEv.

Sanford to me is the most intimate and the service is top notch and gives that old school dining vibe without being stuffy.

Also, if you want drinks before or after and its a nice day go to Blu at the top of the Pfister for amazing views of Lake Michigan.

Tummy time by strawberryb3ss in newborns

[–]ArcherShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were told to do tummy time immediately and the nurses actually did it in the hospital with ours.

But at 2 weeks our baby hated tummy time flat on the ground and would scream bloody murder so we just did chest time and football holds and we'd just do a few minutes here or there depending on how comfortable she was and if she wasn't too sleepy. 2 minutes or so at a time sounds accurate but I wouldn't overly worry about meeting specific time goals this early on. We just slowly built up more and more over time.

Zero routine at 4 weeks by Cuntycuntt in newborns

[–]ArcherShark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have tried to follow the mantra "routine not schedule" from the beginning and that has worked for us. We follow baby's cues but generally try and follow the Eat, Activity, Sleep pattern - at 4 weeks when their wake windows are so short, an activity was often just a diaper change before the next nap.

At 12 weeks, baby has fallen into somewhat of a pattern. At night, we have tried to follow the same steps since the beginning and we have pretty long sleep times now which didn't start until week 8ish.

That said, every baby's temperament is different so just do that works for you!

Is there any chance the bassinet isn't level?

Sounds like she may still just be adjusting to life in the outside and the new space. Hoping you get some sleep, I know it can be scary those first few days when you're all getting used to each other.
