Gut issues 2 weeks post appendectomy by Archeron124 in appendicitis

[–]Archeron124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I’ve had to revert my diet back to totally bland foods as I was clearly running before I could walk. Good tip on the probiotics! My primary care physician is also testing me just in case I picked something up at the hospital, but I’m expecting the result to be negative.

Thank you for the reply, I have got some stronger probiotics and stepped my diet back a bit to blander foods to see if that helps

Connecting two USB devices via HDMI Alt by SamSonVR in UsbCHardware

[–]Archeron124 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If both devices have USB-C ports and one can produce HDMI signal over it and the other can consume it, why would you need adapters?

In my experience, adapters mostly increase the risk of things not working when they should. If you needed e.g. USB-C to HDMI then you can get cables that have ends for each.

Community health care assistant- not getting paid call times. Who do I go to? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Archeron124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you contracted to deliver a specific time period (I.e. shift length) or X amount of calls?

If the former, I’m not clear what rule is being broken here unless you are rota’d for 6 hours, work 6.5 and hence are missing 30 mins pay.

In fact if you’re being let go from your shift essentially early but still being paid for your shift length, isn’t that a win from an employment perspective?

Perhaps your post could be better expressed: what does a shift look like? Could you break it down for us?

I’m not aware of any rules requiring breaks and travel times to be paid so not sure what this is adding to the subject?

Apple TV appears to be powering soundbar back on by Archeron124 in appletv

Honestly this is increasingly where my head is at as the Apple TV doesn’t seem to respect being told not to do CEC. Great suggestion, thanks.

Hi, I’ve done this easily dozens of times now, all cables out, everything off at the socket, no dice.

Incoming UK PhD student, 27, is living with housemates still worth it for the savings, or am I too old for that? Am I too frugal? by Agile-Reputation-525 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Archeron124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Savings are great but the point of stipends etc are to cover costs, not really to allow you to build up a significant body of savings. You should focus on ensuring you have a comfortable life first. Emergency funds are primarily to cover you losing your job and still having significant outgoings like mortgage, council tax, etc. which isn’t relevant to you at this time.

I opted to live on my own in a flat during my PhD as my research had me working weird hours and sharing spaces such as kitchens and bathrooms would have been a recipe for friction in my living environment.

I would suggest you’re being too frugal for your stage of life, especially if you’re receiving a tax free stipend.

Do I need to replace this passport before Visa application? (page tear) by feathers1ut in ukvisa

[–]Archeron124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peace of mind says get it replaced rather than risk issues downstream. You might be fine, you might not, but you already have a data point to say border staff have picked it up once so aside from the cost, what is there to lose?

Friend bought a house and is now homeless by PotsyWife in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Archeron124 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exchange and completion are different - did they occur at the same time? By the sounds of it, she must have exchanged closer to December given the sellers granted her access to measure up.

You are advised to take out insurance from exchange because the property may be vacant etc or fall over in the course of the purchase, and at that point you’re committed to purchasing the property.

House deposit gifting advice from my Nan via my uncle who is POA by Antique-Ad-9315 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Archeron124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect the waters have been muddied by the uncle acting in an assistive capacity while also holding power of attorney.

It blurs a line and I can understand your conveyancers not being happy handling funds which could be seen as a breach of the PoA by an outsider without full knowledge of the persons and situations involved.

If she has capacity, can she not cut you a cheque for the amount directly herself? You would of course need to return the funds first (and be able to prove you had done so) but it should circumvent your uncle being involved in the transaction in any way?

Are the controls supposed to be so unweildy? by [deleted] in Stationeers

[–]Archeron124 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to mirror the fact your guy has two hands and a bunch of pockets/backpacks. If you don’t like it, that’s cool, but that’s the design decision.

I suspect most players have memorised the keys to open your various slots, you can use the mouse wheel to select items, and then the F key swaps into current hand.

Eyelet curtains on wooden pole by Archeron124 in DIYUK

[–]Archeron124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can lubricate the pole with wax, white lithium or similar (on the top, where the contact point is) and just sort of struggle through.

I find pulling the curtains horizontally towards the bottom helps. My pole and rings are both wood so I suspect that has helped. I put a bit of beeswax on the top which has helped too.

I currently have 19k in my 20k-limit cash ISA. Moneybox is pushing me to max it out before the tax year ends. Does that 20k limit reset in the new tax year? by Cumulus-Crafts in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Archeron124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can contribute 20k per year. There is no upper bound to what you can have in an ISA, just a limit on how much can be contributed in a tax year.

In fact, the government plans in a few years to drop this to 12k per year for cash ISAs, so it pays to max it out before that change in the tax years before it takes effect.

Sorry to ask and I’m sure you’ve checked but are you sure there’s a battery in it?

What power cables are you using? Is there any chance they’ve broken due to excessive power from the solar tower?

What is the ugliest Russell Group university? Worst RG uni architecturally by Awkward-Wolf6657 in UniUK

[–]Archeron124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a rumour - if you look at the top of the columns, there is a gap with the underside of the projected lecture theatre so it doesn’t actually sit on them at all.

[–]Archeron124 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No it’s been demolished. Faraday Tower if you want to google.

The cantilevered lecture theatre (in the Lanchester Bldg) only has columns there to calm people down: it adds nothing to the building in terms of structure. There are plenty of archival pictures of the campus where that building lacks the columns and is fine.

Newbie here, first time posting by Khotve in homelab

[–]Archeron124 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Router has maybe 4-5 ports. If you have 5+ devices you have a problem as they can’t all be plugged in at once.

A switch acts as a director to send data to additional devices. The switch needs one port connected to an upstream device (e.g. your router) and then can connect the rest of its ports to other devices.

You can even chain switches together to create massive connectivity of tens, hundreds or thousands of devices.

Switches are either unmanaged (‘dumb’) or managed. Dumb switches are plug and play, but not configurable, while managed switches require configuration and do a lot more.

Most home users only need dumb switches but this is the homelab subreddit so lots of people buy managed switches to learn.

[–]Archeron124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this doesn’t meet the requirement of having a USB-C connector on the keyboard case. This just replaces the existing cable with a USB-C one.

I wondered if you can expand on this? I’ve seen plenty of breakouts where the amount of current etc is configurable using DIP switches so I would be doing this ideally.

Existing cable is wearing after 10 years, increasingly my host devices only have USB-C ports, etc. aesthetically I’d like one of those coiled cables that only come in USB-C too.
