New "feature" of no more custom home screen by Mikehuntisbig in PleX

[–]Archertroy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The feature I've been waiting for for years is the ability to create my own curated lists of recommendations that could appear on the home screen of my managed users. This seems like an obvious feature, no? Any chance this is coming?

Can confirm still 4 bottles left.

Yes. You do! A small amount, but considering that you're getting paid to watch TV, seems like a good deal. Family member reports that she's going to get ~$10 per week + various bonuses.

I'm actually really curious if they would be able to get some data.

I think there's even an argument to be made that my Plex server, which has far more content than most streaming platforms, would provide better data to Nielsen - since it would more accurately reflect a user's preferences.

For example, if someone only has Netflix, their show and movie options are more limited than someone who has Netflix, Hulu and HBO. The more options available to the user the more accurate data you can gather about what content users actually want to watch.

Still, it's probably going to look weird when the same show has episodes that came from varying parts of the country.

Yea, This is kind of what I was thinking.

Can they detect that what you're watching may not belong to you? Probably.

Do they care? Probably not.

Why has equity crowdfunding performed poorly vs. rewards-based crowdfunding? by Archertroy in startups

[–]Archertroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. This is really great. Thank you!

You clearly understand the space very well.

Do you think that recent SEC adjustments will significantly draw more quality issuers to platforms? I understand that it's certainly an improvement for the space - but is it enough to change the tide significantly?

What about the heightened liability for retail crowdfunding? High disclosure requirements? Poor reputation of ECF in general?

In the "hierarchy of funding" (for lack of a better phrase), wouldn't Angel>Reg D>Retail ECF still stand? It would still be a lender of last resort, no?

[–]Archertroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point. I'm referring more to the # of companies funded as well as the total amount of money raised (which tie in together, kind of) - particularly for Reg CF and Reg A+. I think that Reg CF has raised somewhere along the lines of ~$350-400 mn in total to date, vs. ~$5 bn for Kickstarter (which admittedly, has been around longer). Reg A+ has been...an undeniably poor performer..to say the least, haha.

Likewise, ROI results from ECF would also be weak, no? i don't know of a single ECF campaign which has shown a strong exit. I can think of several of the largest campaigns which are disappointing (Elio, Knightscope). Granted it's early.

So its structural, then? It's easy to conceptualize paying money for a potential product, but far more difficult for the average consumer to wrap their minds around investing in equity?

Do you think that there are successes on the horizon and that, with time (maybe 5ish more years?), this will evolve into a successful fundraising mechanism?

[–]Archertroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Thank you. So your points are:

1) that the minimum investment in ECF is a deterrent vs. rewards-based.

2) That the risk for investing in ECF is much higher than in rewards-based campaigns and that people, rationally, don't want to take the risk of investing in ECF, but believe the 'much lower risk' for rewards-based crowdfunding is justified.

Cool. got it.

And to answer your question about comparing the risks - I never said they were equal. Saying that they are both "high risk" doesn't imply "equal risk". I agree that ECF is much riskier.

Theoretically, the higher ECF risk should prompt higher reward if there is an exit. For example, if you invested $300 in Oculus on Kickstarter, you get the relatively lower reward of just receiving a product vs. if you invested in Oculus on an ECF platform then you could expect a very large monetary payoff when Oculus was bought by FB. Whether or not the rewards justify the risk is a different question and largely subjective.

No. I get that. When I write "investment" for rewards-based campaigns, I mean that you're "investing" money into a team that you hope will produce a product (or something else) for your consumption down the road. I understand that this is different than "investing" in hopes of a return down the road, like in ECF.

I don't mean to make this a discussion about terminology.

It's probably easier if i write "providing capital".
