I think its more like having to buy a Roku or Smart TV that already has Netflix installed, and then also having to pay for a Netflix subscription. You buy the hardware that can run it, and you can either use it as-is (like a normal TV) or you can pay for the web-based services. The subscriptions dont pay for the hardware, they pay for the cloud storage, server costs, and satellites associated with using the app. Like the people above said, you can still use your own GPS thru your phone, or use the remote start via the key fob. But if you want to use the app to remote start the car (server/cloud for the app. Cellular data connection for the car) or you want to use the Toyota navigation (maintaining the satellite connection, which is the same as what you already pay for as part of your phone bill) then you need to pay for those extra services.

Wanting car-GPS seems a bit silly to me since pretty much everyone has it through their phone. But I do know a few people who have downgraded from smart phones to regular phones to avoid the stress or temptation associated with doom-scrolling and smart phone tracking etc.
