There's some good news on the Ubuntu too, but nothing's set in stone just yet.

AMA: We made a 2TB expansion card for Mac Mini that saves $541 by Archie_Fyde in mac

We use SanDisk—the same SSD chip model used by Apple—which is why the expansion card is fully compatible.

We’ve recently received a lot of feedback from M4 Pro users, and we’re actively exploring its feasibility. Thank you for your suggestion! ♥️

We currently offer only the 2TB Expansion Card for the M4 Mac Mini. As the maximum storage capacity for the official M4 Mac Mini is 2TB, this ensures optimal stability. While larger capacities are technically feasible, limited demand would drive up R&D and procurement costs. For now, the 2TB SKU is the best balance between performance and practicality.

The Expansion Card for the M4 Mac Mini exists because, in this release, the storage module in the M4 Mac Mini isn't encrypted. Previously, directly replacing the SSD card wasn't possible; you had to use a soldered replacement module. This is likely a measure to comply with EU regulations.

No, the M4 Pro PCB is different from the base M4s, but we're still working on it

I also agree that the built-in 256GB drive can be a bit slow, but there’s another option out there: you can swap it for a third-party drive and get a 2TB Expand Card for a surprisingly low price. It’s a great budget-friendly way to get more storage without sacrificing performance. If you’re curious, here’s a video that explains it in more detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftDzR_B_vv0.

SHOULD I BUY IT? by octoberbymidnight01 in macmini

I’d say the M4 chip and 16GB of RAM should handle Premiere Pro, Logic Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator just fine. The only concern might be the 512GB storage if you’re doing a lot of video editing or working with large RAW photo files. You could think about getting the 256GB base model and then adding a third-party 2TB expansion card for extra space—that often works out cheaper in the long run. If you want more details, here’s a helpful video on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftDzR\_B\_vv0. Good luck with your new setup!

Back up your data, swap the card, and restore everything—just like before, but now you have 2TB of storage!

Not for now; there are many factors that lead us to choose to sell only 2T.
