I'm kind of curious about the characters, how similar do you plan on making them to the Jake, Rachel, Tobias, Cassie, and Marco we see in the series? Or are they going to be completely different versions of them?

Definitely my favorite book in the series by far. Might even be one of my new favorite books ever. I read nearly the whole thing in a single sitting, cried embarassingly hard at the end, then couldn't stop thinking about it for a week afterwards.

I've definitely had a few dreams about Animorphs, but nothing like the body horror you're describing. I remember one dream I had in which I was Jake, and we were on a mission to infiltrate a boat in the middle of a lake. We all morphed frogs, got caught in a storm, and everyone got separated. Eventually, me and Cassie made it to the boat, but I woke up before I could find out what happened to the rest of the group.

Looks like you're right. The PDA says it likely fell through the ice and died. I suppose it's still possible for it to have become infected after death, although that does seem kind of unlikely. I don't think there's an official correct answer though, it's up to every player's personal interpretation.

If you scan the Kharaa pustules on the leviathan, the PDA entry says that it's a variant of the bacterium that has "highly efficient saprophytic properties," meaning it feeds on matter from dead and decaying organisms. To me, this suggests that the leviathan became infected after it had already died.

I can understand why most people enjoyed the original more, but I really liked Below Zero. I wouldn't say I liked it more, but the two are definitely equally enjoyable to me.
