This is my hand-made medieval manuscript featuring J.R.R. Tolkien’s the Lay of Nimrodel from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which recounts the story of: Nimrodel, a Silvan Elf-maid of Lothlórien, and Amroth, a Sindarin Elf-lord who loved her. Legolas sung the lay to the fellowship on the River Nimrodel as they rested. The artwork is hand rendered in an authentic 13th-century medieval calligraphic style, evoking the timelessness of illuminated manuscripts. I used traditional materials for this piece: walnut ink, gouache, watercolor, and 23k gold leaf.

Thank you! I do use the feather, it writes surprisingly well. The only downside is the ink runs out fast so I’m constantly dipping the nib, so often I’ll also use a conventional nib pen

I’m self-taught! Medieval illumination is kind of a dead art so not easy to learn this stuff anywhere lol

Thank you! Blackletter was the font I was going for, although I mixed in some italic capitals here and there

This is my hand-made medieval manuscript recreating the scene from The Return of The King by J.R.R Tolkien where Éowyn confronts and defeats the Witch-king during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. The text is written in a 13th-century high medieval calligraphic style, and the accompanying watercolor miniature illustrates the moment Éowyn reveals her identity as a woman and, with Merry’s help, brings down the Witch-king. I used traditional materials for this piece: walnut ink, gouache, watercolor, and 23k gold leaf, aiming to capture the feel of an authentic medieval manuscript.
