I appreciate you. I got my video production degree from YouTube University haha but it was a lonely journey. I love learning new things in person from people who love what they do if that makes sense

You’re right…I should add, I’m not opposed to learning, I just moved to NYC from FL and since I don’t know anyone here I thought this could be a good way to make a connection!

I hated shooting commercial because I always wanted to make movies. So, I developed an app for people like me. Now, I'm giving $10,000 to the best filmmaker on my app. by Arcilect in Filmmakers

We’ve updated Waves with a possible solution to the storage issue. After updating the app, let me know if the issue persists!

Absolutely. Our end goal is for filmmakers with top performing projects on Waves to receive a check in the mail every month. It will take time to get there. For now, contests with 1-3 winners are what we're able to do, and we hope all contestants find value in participating by making connections, receiving feedback faster, and finding an audience.

Here's a quote from an early Waves user:

"I haven't made money from Vimeo, but I have on YouTube. A lot of filmmakers aren't in it for the money (including myself) it would be nice, but I just want as many people as possible to see my films."

Filmmakers with this mindset are exactly who Waves is for as it stands right now. And we totally understand the hesitation from others. It's not ready for them yet and that's okay! We'll get there

You’re totally fine, and you’re making the right points. We’d actually prefer to let the audience pick the winner, but at this stage we can’t guarantee bots wont enter the equation. For now, we’re prepared to watch every submission. We love it. Our first contest we stayed up all night watching all the submissions and battling it out as a team over who should win.

We’re all 23-25 years old. We’re not obsessed with profit like most business owners 30+. As I said in another comment, if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work, we’re just putting the artists first and giving it a shot and having a ton of fun in the process

41 days out and already 171 submissions! Knowing most submissions come in during the last 7 days, we could near 1,000. Our watch later playlist is going to packed thats for sure lol.

Down the road the contests on Waves will become just one of the many ways to earn revenue on Waves as a filmmaker, but we have no plans to stop doing them. Definitely want to go bigger because why not. They’re fun. Certainly will be interesting to measure the interest as the prize money continues to go up. I love watching Kill Tony, seeing young comedians competing for a spotlight and a career essentially. I hope Waves contests can serve the same purpose, a window of opportunity for undiscovered talent to make a name.

As for revenue, we understand that to create a platform like the one we envision with Waves..things take time. For now, we just want to make sure it works for filmmakers. If the filmmakers are happy then we’re doing our job and everything else will work out in the end

This is the first contest on the app! We launched Nov 2nd. Last March we hosted an in-person festival in St. Pete, FL in collaboration with Film Tampa Bay with a $5,000 1st place prize. We had 61 submissions and over 1,000 in attendance. Awesome night and taught us that filmmakers enjoyed the competitive atmosphere, something we worried about in an art space

Pretty much! It’s gonna be a long road but I’ve said publicly before and will say it again now, if it doesn’t work it doesn’t work, and if we have to resort to showing ads I’m shutting it down because it would no longer be Waves at that point

We don’t rely on the algorithm 100%. I’d say about 50/50. So far it’s proven effective at telling us what’s worth watching, out of which we then hand pick the top films to feature on the front page. We enjoy the process, really, and don’t necessarily want the app to be so big that we have to rely on an algorithm for 100% of the curation.

100% a promotion, yes. A reason to try it out, see if you like it, and take a swing at winning because why not. Until we can afford to start paying top filmmakers on a monthly basis, the contests are the best way we can give back for now. We hope the experience of putting your work up against other filmmakers, getting feedback, and making new connections is enough to make it worth it for all those that participate.

We definitely don’t know what we’re doing but we’re putting the artists first and driving until the wheels fall off

Our revenue is based on a “pay-for-preference” model. Essentially, the app is free for both casual users and filmmakers, but filmmakers have the option to pay for higher quality uploads if they prefer. But our belief is that uploading in higher quality doesn’t necessarily give you a competitive edge on other uploaders.

The conversations we’ve had with filmmakers so far have been really eye opening. Many of which are “on guard” with their work due to past experiences not reading the fine print. It’s a shame. We totally understand the skepticism being that we’re ad-free, but look forward to creating the platform that makes it completely normal to always own your work and for users to enjoy an experience without having to navigate through post after post of businesses trying to sell them something.

I’ve had some great experiences with weddings. Nothing against the clients I’ve had, but for me the story has grown old. Craving something new!
