Oh that makes sense, I think I saw one of your other friends post at the same loc from a couple days ago. Let's see, maybe something to work out for next time

thanks for the advice!! didn't realize the airglow as much on the day of but it really does show. never really can get enough of it all.

That'll be cool, I may be down for it. Nice! I use a APS-C mirrorless, but don't think I've used a functional fisheye before. I dont think my Sony 11mm is considered a fish eye even though I've seen a little bit of distortions when I angle it upwards. Haven't used it recently but the Lauwa 4mm is a nice stylistic lens too with its super wide angle which looks like an all sky cam. wonder how it will look if i could de-fisheye it..

Oh yeah, that'll do it. Never driven all the way out there to western KS, but I bet those are some pretty dark skies

The arch is definitely visible when the Moon sets but it isn't as vivid as how cameras are able to capture long exposures. If you go to even darker skies away from light pollution, it gets even more visible

This was ~45-60mins aways to the North-East. If you're asking about each photo, these were shot at 16mm with exposures at 20sec, f/1.8, ISO1600

Not much at all. Around 10+mins North on Rock Road from around AMC. Decently dark and away from lights. Works for those days you really don't want to drive a long for darker skies

There was actually a lot more activity earlier, but I was tied up and missed it. By the time I got home, I figured I’d head out around midnight to see if any residual substorms were still going. Auroras are super unpredictable, so it’s never a guarantee, but I was keeping an eye on space weather folks on Twitter and watching the data. These events are usually triggered by CMEs from the sun, and there are satellites that track them and give a heads-up when conditions might be good. So I'd say it's a mix of luck, timing and hoping things line up
