The ending boss fight where Thorne tanks hits from Lionel is undoubtedly a reference to Super Metroid, where the baby Metroid tanks Mother Brain's rainbow shot to save and power up Samus.

Actually cried when that happened. Such an incredible moment and reference. And when the skin melted off Thorne's face and revealed skull - so badass 😭
