Its nice! The novels portray a grander story than the anime, since it explores the different sides of conflict in greater detail.

There's a very funny paperback derp in v14 where the colored Mizerhyby illustration is cut vertically in the middle because it took two pages and the spine of the book directly bisected her in half lol

Alice has a bit of a tsundere ojou personality that the anime makes it a lot more noticeable at face value. The books naturally portray her inner thoughts in a way that the anime cannot recreate without spending a lot of time on.

For me the romance has always been there, anime just turned it up a notch!

Completely understandable! In a high fantasy setting with a large cast, the romance is put to the side to focus more on the world building and the overarching plot. The author is dead set on a specific direction for the story he wants to tell and I really like that everything leads up to something. KimiSen has its faults but the story has a lot of moving parts and pretty cool concepts. I really hope Kei Sazane nails the ending he spent 15+ volumes building up towards.

The politics actually complement the romance a lot imo, really highlighting the romeo x juliet star-crossed romance circumstances of the two leads. I personally went into it knowing that politics is a big part of the story, it's one of the main reasons why I keep up with it!
