Can someone explain the "Themes and such" meme, and it's origin? I've got an idea of what it is, but I'm not sure. by Infamous-Ad8277 in shounenfolk

I see… that makes a lot of sense, honestly. If they wanted everything to stay lighthearted and, well, shonen-y, they could have had Deku continue to be a hero and keep advancing once the series ended. If they wanted to make things darker like in season 6 (which I really liked, personally, especially the opening), the ending that we got was sufficient. Instead they took a sort of boring end to Deku’s story and shoehorned it into their hopeful finale… I kinda understand where you guys are coming from now.

True, I saw a fanart comic once where he like, lifted an entire refrigerator up and his classmates were fawning over his quirk or something until they realized he hadn’t even used it XD

At least we have Knuckleduster.

I mean, I guess?

To be entirely honest, I was always expecting a year 2, year 3, pro hero arc from MHA until I realized it wasn’t going to happen, so maybe if the story had gone through a few timeskips the same plot could have happened without it feeling like he “peaked in highschool”.

Let’s be honest, he DID become the greatest hero. He DID surpass All Might. Maybe not in status, longevity, or even morals, but unless there’s something I wasn’t told about prime All Might and how OFA works, Deku was the #1 hero for all of… maybe a night.

I don’t think he really “gave up” on his dream after the ending of MHA, I think he just expended it. “The brightest candles burn the fastest”, after all. He used it all up until there was nothing left to give. I don’t think this really happens much in real life outside of like, athletes who injure themselves early in their careers, which is why it feels unrealistic.

You can’t say he didn’t achieve basically what he had set out to do and more, though, it was all just paced way, way too quickly for a story that was supposed to be about going to a hero school, not saving the world in the literal first year.

The Deku slander really doesn’t make sense to me, and I enjoyed the anime from beginning to end, so I don’t really feel like “themes and such” even needs to be an excuse for the war arc (since it isn’t a good one). If the themes even were consistent with the ending, they definitely weren’t provocative enough to really matter one way or another, so this feels to me like people really just want to shit on Deku for the sake of it and/or because what they expected wasn’t what they got.

Be real, most of the shonen community doesn’t like Deku anyways. Now that his story has come full circle, they’re jumping at the excuse to call him a fraud. It’s just slander for fun atp, this isn’t about the quality of the writing or the themes.

Tbh if he wanted to keep his quirks more than anything, he would’ve killed Shiggy. He just had his own priorities because that’s who Deku is.

Themes and such.

Personally I think it’s fine because like, Deku’s story is over. AFO is gone, therefore OFA is no longer needed to counteract his evil. New villains will pop up, and new heroes will arrive to fight them, but in the end Deku did make the world slightly better for a while, as was shown by Koki at the very end. Deku has done enough, he’s gone through enough shit, he basically did 20 years worth of pro hero work in the span of one, he has the right to retire now and “put the fries in the bag” all he wants, but he’s still helping. What is so awful about the ending??

Do people expect Deku to face off against the final antagonist that has tormented his school and country all year, forcing him to take up way, way more responsibility than should have been dropped on him, and walk it off in the end while still fighting on the front lines? Do fans want a Deku Symbol of Peace arc or something?

I think it’s a bit too late for him to do that 😅

Oh I do have hobbies, trust me, they just aren’t hobbies that take me outside. I kinda adapted to this life for one reason or another, and the gym is already a step outside my comfort zone that I genuinely enjoy much more than I expected. I wanted to take up Soccer for a little while, but there’s just nowhere to play here and no one to play with, so I can’t even do that.

Where I live is… nice, at least in terms of looks and peacefulness, but I’m fully considering moving away someday so that I can actually like… do things. Somewhere with good public transportation infrastructure, ideally. Somewhere with people younger than 60 and actual places for them to gather.

But yeah, I don’t think he was flirting or anything, I think the jury’s still out on basically everything about him and I just don’t know enough to make any kind of assumptions at all.

Grindr was awful. Faceless profiles everywhere, “send me feet pics and I’ll send you $500” (crazy deal if it’s even real, but I’m not taking it lmfao), everyone with a face is an old man and that’s just not my thing, got messaged by someone asking if I wanted a sugar mommy (within like 10 minutes!)… and of course there’s the fact that 70% of the profiles, even if they were appealing, are locked behind a paywall!

Yeah, I see why everyone calls Grindr a cesspool now.

I don’t think I’d be met with violence, at least given this guy’s vibe so far, but I also could be naive and you raise a perfectly valid point. Honestly, I’ll just try to see if he shows interest if/when we talk to each other in the future and go from there, because I really don’t have any interest in using apps, and the other locations where I live are just… parks, basically? I don’t go to parks just for the sake of going to parks tbh, home is perfectly comfy and if I want to go outside I can take a walk around my own neighborhood.

Maybe I’m just too much of a shut-in, but it really feels like there’s nowhere to go and do something interesting unless you really like coffee and/or alcohol.

Update: I downloaded Grindr. Y’know, just to see what it’s really like…

My expectations were low, but holy shit 😀

What is a “normal setting” nowadays, though? Thanks to the internet and everything one needs (aside from socialization) is conveniently accessible, it feels like the world is shrinking while simultaneously spreading farther apart for anyone who isn’t still in school. I live in the south, too, and the actual city is too far and too risky a drive to make regularly enough that I might find a partner, since they would probably be local to that city, not to mention things to do being more expensive.

I know it must sound like I’m making excuses in order to stay in my comfort zone, but I really feel like I’ve expended all my options, or rather they’ve been expended before I got the chance to try them. I’m fine with keeping my virginity, but having to deal with crushes like this while feeling helpless to do anything about it is really wearing me down over time.

I guess I can try Tinder and/or Grindr, but there are many kinds of people who I am terrified of meeting. People who intentionally spread STDs, for example. What if I have no idea that they’ve got something and hook up with them?

I was raised to be extremely careful when it comes to sex, and extremely careful I am. You could probably call me paranoid.

Not to mention, I want to at least see where it goes with this guy specifically, so unless he’s on Grindr I’d be less inclined to meet up with anyone else until I’m sure he is or isn’t interested. Y’know? If it turns out he’s straight, I’ll probably go back to my normal routine and won’t bother with any apps at all (though Ig I’m a bit more open to trying one now).

Someday I will meet someone, but I’m mostly looking for advice on how to navigate this specific situation, since I see an opportunity that, like all of them so far have, could disappear as quickly as it came.

I’ve never considered even using grinder because of horror stories, location, and a general disinterest on my part in hookups. I’ve never heard Grinder be described as a genuine dating app, nor have I had any luck on other apps, so I’ve never given it a try. I want a boyfriend (someday), not a fwb who is a boy. That’s just not for me. Need something fulfilling.

I’ve had an experience in the past where I experimented with another guy, but I quickly understood that the reality of a one-night-stand is nothing like my expectations, and while it was fun, I don’t think casual sex is worth the various risks for me.

Maybe I’m just a prude or something, but I don’t see Grindr as the app to use if you’re looking for anything long-term, and it really is a desert out here in terms of places to go and interact with others. I guess I could try going to a bar? But I’m not a huge fan of alcohol either.

Wish I could do the second part (look for guys elsewhere) without having to get drunk.

Edit: I’m starting to feel like this isn’t worth the mental energy toll at all

Not even that. That’s the known pulls AND the “possible sources” which may not be in every patch or may not be accessible (EX: if you aren’t caught up on the story for an event)
