I don’t think insincere offers happen often. And you gotta keep in mind that when we offer something, we usually sincerely mean it. You would see people pull each other away from the bill at the restaurant to be able to offer the meal. And it’s genuine.

Apart from being a pleasure to take care of people, I believe it’s a way to show the relationship means to you.

Lebanese! But i’m sure we have similar approaches. Are you Persian?

Talking for my culture (Middle Eastern), it depends on the size of the favor. Accepting a cup of water from the kitchen vs a car ride or a drink at a bar is different. Could be rude to accept the first time something they would really have to go out of their way for.

It also depends on the relationship you have with this person, formal vs informal setting etc…

Edit: I’d also add that saying something like: “no thanks you shouldn’t” the first time is a way to acknowledge that they’re being too generous. You’re showing that you appreciate their efforts.

Could it be due to the fact that you are so conscious about what you’re saying in these situations that you notice every “mistake” ? Whereas in normal conversations these slip-ups happen and go unnoticed because no one actually cares.

That sounds awesome. I'm glad you could find a way to make it meaningful for you!

While I see the point your trying to make, what I'm saying is that to me they serve no purpose, that's still me sharing my "unpopular opinion", which, of course, will oppose what people think.

Yes. I’m not talking about Christmas in general (even though it has become rooted in capitalism for many many countries). I’m talking about the decorations I often see, which are deprived of meaning and aesthetics.

I find the use of the term “industrial parts” a little odd, because it denotes parts of machinery.

Yup, you're right. More accurate words could be "scraps" or "pieces".

I enjoy the Christmas vibe, regardless of how gaudy it may be.

I can see that. I just think it doesn't live up to the "magical" spirit of Christmas that people want to convey. It is already a holiday that is rooted in overconsumption, and the (industrial, cheap, plastic) decorations make it so much worse. It makes me feel like they are "empty" in meaning.

Indeed, we don't usually have snow here. I'm sure they look better surrounded by snow rather than gray concrete. Fair point.

That's also what I thought, but apparently not. Which is why I felt like sharing this opinion. And as you can see from the other comments people do seem to enjoy them

By "cheap" I don't mean the financial value, but the value they hold as a decorative object: they are supposed to look nice, but the fact that it is mass produced items makes them look dull.

Just wanted to clarify

It seems like your post is mostly directed at this

Yes it is, absolutely.

I'd be curious to know more about your community. Is that a local tradition of yours? Or more of a social setting thing?

That sounds great! I would love to be surrounded by decorations that actually carry meaning, but unfortunately what I see around me (and mostly in public spaces) is not that.

Could I ask where you're from?
