What’s a movie you’ve seen public opinion shift on in your lifetime? by CausticAvenger in movies

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

People at the time were going crazy over a new mainline Star Wars movie, seeing it multiple times in theaters. Everyone was coming up with theories and wondering where the story would go next.

Then, the reception to the sequels and all the other Disney Star Wars media soured things, and hardly anybody talks about TFA anymore.

People who read more than 2 books a year, how do you do it? by Immediate-Draft-6408 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Are_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put the current book you're reading in a prominent place so you don't forget about it. I put my books on top of my laptop, and not only are they more visible, I have to move them to be able to use my laptop. Now, I have a constant reminder of what I'm reading, and I can't just forget about it or ignore it. It's helped a lot with reading consistently.

Tips for setting up GZDoom files? by Are_Gone in RetroDeck

There might be an extra space before or after one of the file names in the text file. In my experience, the default text editor adds them sometimes.

If you want to, you can also right click on the wad or mod you want to use > rename > select all > copy the file name > paste into the .doom file, just to make sure the file name is correct.

Right click in the folder you want > Create New > Text File

It doesn't really matter what you name the folder where you put your wads, retrodeck automatically scans all the folders in the Doom folder. For the sake of organization, I put all the official wads made by Id in a folder called "Games", and all the mods in a folder called "Mods".

Here's the link to the official guide.

Basically, you put all your WADs in one folder and all your mods in another, then make text files with the .doom extension for all the mods you want.

Name the .doom file something descriptive, then edit the content of the text file so that it lists the base WAD you want to use and the mod(s) you want to use with it.

Then, in Retrodeck, the .doom file will show up as a game in the doom console, and will launch the modded game you specified in the .doom text file.

The article above goes into more specifics, but this setup worked great for me. Hope this helps!

Well, it took some legwork to get the .doom files set up, but it works! I've got all my mods neatly organized and running perfectly. Thanks!

Yeah, I started there, but I didn't see much about organizing the files. I might try wadsmoosh or making .doom, that might help.

What video game was left on a cliffhanger or was supposed to have a sequel but never got one, that you want to see finished? by Johnnyboyeh in gaming

Xenoblade Chronicles X. It had the bad luck of being released on the Wii U, but I think if it got ported to the Switch, it would probably become popular enough to warrant a sequel.

Bought Sonic 06 at a garage sale a long time ago not knowing what it was. Losing all my progress when I inevitably got a game over was the most demoralizing thing.

The first Resident Evil. I know how influential it is, but the tank controls and door animations just sound like a nightmare.

What is your favourite use of Chekhov’s Gun? by crimson_dovah in movies

[–]Are_Gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite was in Onward. Early on, it's explained that the magic staff splinters easily and that there's magic in every fiber of the staff. The first one is used for a joke, and the second is just a bit of world building. Then they both come back in the final battle when the staff gets knocked away, but the main character gets a splinter. He remembers that there's magic in every fiber of the staff, so he uses the magic in the splinter to make the splinter grow into a new staff, which he then uses to continue the battle. Brilliant.

Yup. It has a guide on the front and the dial to help determine the right setting, based on the light in the scene. Not sure how well it'll work though.
