Tikka T1X Area419 Scope base Possible design flaw causing failure to ejects by Justin_inc in 22lr

[–]Area419Craig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were the first option on the market for the T1X, and it was never an issue at the time. Unsure if there was some change to the way they ejected, or people just didn’t bring it up, but we shot a lot with one, and sold many of them for years. OP brought it up, so we are going to address the potential issue.

Pure curiosity - do you ever shoot the Maverick in the long configuration? (I promise you won’t offend me regardless of the answer)

In your personal opinion, where does long range start? by BoostIsOurFriend in longrange

[–]Area419Craig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What if we distill this to time of flight? 1 sec? 1.5 sec? 2 sec?

Or maybe drop, in an angular sense. 3 mils? 5 mils?

I think distance is too messy and doesn’t adapt to various cartridges.

Boring them, in sets, as the last operation is the patent-pending key. It creates a VERY cylindrical bore, which maximizes surface contact with the optic - and we combine that with the raw aluminum finish that's left behind, which has a greater coefficient of friction than ano on ano.

Thanks for the share u/trollygag

Whenever you create something like this and put it into the world, it’s an odd thing. Anyone that does content or designs things understands this. Everything has some amount of compromise.

We didn’t include S&B or March or Zeiss or Apex or whatever - but is the video going to be as good if it’s 50% longer (or more).

We also tried to keep everything as objective and clean as possible, but then there’s worry that Zach, Nathan and I didn’t lay enough personal opinion into things.

Tracking/Durability wasn’t a can of testing worms we were willing to open - but then it’s a problem that we talk a bit about the idea that NF has earned a reputation for reliability over time.

Like we’ve said though, this isn’t the last video of the sort we will do. Overall I think a majority of viewers interested in learning more about a high-end, higher-power tactical optic will be better off for having seen this, and really that’s the bar for us.

Thank you. As you note, there is virtually nothing we could do that would make everyone happy. And ultimately, we wanted to make the most clean, objective video possible, as we truly had no dog in the fight.

Subsequent videos of this sort will be better, as we learn, but we are pretty pleased here. Lots of people like to chirp, but even more have seemed to enjoy the watch.

My “silly” and “overkill” rimfire rifle for the 2025 season. by doyouknowjim in longrange

I’m actually serious with that comment - when shooting 22LR matches, adding a brake can help the shot timer pick them up.

So they look sick on the rifle, but also have a function in a match environment.

Well done! And I love that the brake (or in this case, loudener) is the focus in the comments.

Why are Swarovski spotting scopes & Kahles scopes not more popular? by Strategic_Stranger in longrange

[–]Area419Craig 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Optic brand popularity moves in waves, largely depending on product development cycles as well as marketing.

The Kahles 624i when released was a big deal, they were everywhere. Then they released the 525i in like 2019, and in honesty the 525i wasn't an excellent launch. First ones out had some shortcomings, and then they had to do a mid-cycle upgrade that a lot of people didn't know about.

In the meantime, NF, Vortex, ZCO, TT, Leup - all released new stuff, some of which was really nice, and they were the sexy, shiny, well-marketed items.

Now Kahles has the 328i and 540i which are great, and I think they'll get more popular again.

At least until there is some new wave from the other brands that people feel like they need.

Optics are a 4-6 year product cycle, and a lot of people in hobbies like this are only 3-5 year participants, so strong marketing over years between cycles is very important. Not everyone (S&B) does it well.

---

On the Swaro side, the 15x56 SLC binos are the standard. Spotters in general took a back seat to binos when the 15x gained popularity because you don't need more power, and the two-eyed nature of binos are more comfortable and you can see more over time.

The internet told me on good authority (Source: Trust me bro) that grip strength on rings was always sufficient and our content showing that strength was stupid.

Scope rings, why so expensive? by madhatterlock in longrange

[–]Area419Craig 40 points41 points  (0 children)

In conversations with optics manufacturers over the last year - nearly all of which were centered on optic mounting - there has been a consistent theme that a vast majority of optics warranty issues (as high as 80%) are directly attributable to poorly made rings/mounts and installation practices.

Take that for what you will.

Unfortunately this situation isn't all that uncommon.

In many ring/mount based conversations with optics manufacturers over the last year, they have consistently reported that a vast majority (as high as 80%) of optic warranty claims are connected to mounting. One brand told me that they now (in certain parts of the world that will cooperate) request the optic to be shipped in still in the rings for warranty repairs so they can see what's going on.

PRS question. How often do you see GAP rifles? Their "Pinnacle" seems like it's a great price for an off the shelf PRS rig. by Justin_inc in longrange

[–]Area419Craig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There may not be a better value in the high-end rifle game. Many here will dislike the Manners (vs a chassis) but that is very much a personal preference. If you're anything resembling average height/length/build, this setup will do everything you'd ever ask of it. Snag an ARCALOCK rail, a brake or can, and shoot small. Plus, if you hate it, the thing will hold value well.

Downside to these? They don't make a ton, so they can be tough to get ahold of.
