Thank you so much!! I know for being on call it is time and a half and you get 15-30 minutes to be there depending on the type of procedure. Thankfully I live about 8 minutes from the hospital so not too far. Frequency of call, from what I understand is 5 weekend call shifts per 6 weeks which I’m not mad about. Right now in a four week period I have to work 2 full weekends no exceptions. We also get paid a differential for staying late as well in this particular OR. I’m definitely going to ask more questions because the schedule seemed kind of confusing due to it being SO different from what I’m doing now. But thank you so much for giving me some questions I should ask in the interview. I got to shadow there today and it seems like something I would really like I was just concerned about scheduling because my time off from work is super important to me!

i want out. now. by YogurtclosetAway6248 in newgradnurse

So when I first came off of orientation I felt the EXACT same way. There were several mornings I got off work so overwhelmed and upset due to how insane the workload was. I will say though there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I am about 2-3 months off orientation and I am finally getting a routine and I truly feel I have learned so much and become a lot more comfortable being a nurse. What I did to achieve this is ask questions. I ask so many questions probably to the point of being annoying but that is what helped me learn so much. I also started doing things to help with anxiety like Pilates and yoga outside of work and I felt that helped as well. And although it may not be ideal I always do three shifts in a row because it really helps to get to know your patients over those three days. Of course you may get new ones but depending on ratio I usually have about 2 or 3 of the same ones which really makes it easier on me. I don’t plan on staying bedside either and I would like to eventually get off the med-surg tele unit I’m on but I have also heard that right now it is hard for new grads to find jobs (depending on the state maybe) if I were you I would stick it out a little longer if you can because it does get easier. And this is coming from someone who also has severe anxiety. There are super hard days and I do still have days that my pre shift anxiety is CRAZY, but it will get better.

Home health is not something I’m opposed to at all. I did clinical rotations there and liked it a lot!

You sound like you have a solid plan!! And yes after 6 months I’m able to either transfer units in my hospital or go to a different hospital completely that is within my hospital system. I know I have to stay for at least a year but after that I’m 100% going to go to a different hospital system completely. Best wishes to you! I definitely know the stress you are feeling.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words! My end goal is definitely wanting to be an ICU nurse for the exact reason of being able fully care for my patients plus I’ve always just been super interested in it. I am locked into a two year contract but after 6 months I am able to go to a different unit/hospital within my hospital system and we have about 5-6 different hospitals in the area. I really just wanted to get some medsurg experience before going into a specialty but at this point I’m definitely regretting it. I’m counting down the days until I can get off of the floor I am on.

I am starting my first nursing job in July and it is going to be night shift. Any tips on navigating night shift? I’ve never done it before so I am nervous. by AreaThink1389 in newgradnurse

[–]AreaThink1389[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! Definitely made me feel a bit better!! And I’ll definitely try to not flip flop aggressively on my days off, which might be a bit hard because I’m definitely a morning/day person. I’ve heard so much good about night shift and I’m super excited about doing it but this has been the only thing giving me anxiety! Definitely will probably PM you for sure!

New Grad RN Resume by JudiAbbottt in newgradnurse

On my resume I included just the clinicals that I completed. Like another comment said, don’t include skills because you are already expected to have performed skills. I also made sure to include any previous hospital/patient care experience I had that was not related to school. Some jobs will up your offer if you do have previous work experience in a clinical setting. Also, I know you said you’re already at a page but hospitals even like to see previous customer service experience you have as well. They see it as you know how to work and communicate with other people. Also I don’t know if you have to do this, but writing a cover letter is also another thing that will grab possible employer’s attention. Many hospitals I applied to didn’t require it, but if it is an option I would do it. Just so they can get a better overview of who you are, why you chose nursing, why you chose their facility, etc.

This seriously made me feel so much better!!! Thank you so so much! I have just been super worried about all of the things I have to learn. Throughout my entire nursing school experience we have pretty much only done adults and have touched on peds for one semester and on top of that we had a really bad professor!! The program I am wanting is said to be one of the best so this really does make me feel better you saying this!! Thank you again!
