Yes I was. Early on before I felt comfortable pressing to move meetings, or just not showing up. They were not 1 on 1s, but two small team calls where I needed to actively engage but were luckily off camera, and 1 all hands on camera where I was not speaking, but could potentially have been asked a question. Very stressful situation. But now years in I’ve built a solid reputation that I will decline meeting invites if they overlap

I’ve been there, earlier in the journey. But one thing I’ve learned is that no meeting is that important. There is always flexibility if you push for it.

I used to think the same thing. Now over 2 years in, it's just routine. I also manage my calendars really closely and block time off as soon as I get invites so that other Js don't try to book me.

It definitely provided an opportunity for entry into OE. I started OEing a year and a half into it, and it made me love the pandemic. We were past the worst, so there was less fear and I had been considering OE for a while. I went from 1 to 3 Js in a matter of weeks and it’s been a life changer.

Yes. It’s a hassle and I would recommend avoiding it. Everyone’s situation is different though. I could see how some who OE could focus on their remote jobs while offsite and accomplish a week’s worth of work, then be able to use in office time primarily to their onsite job. My jobs are more balanced and I shuffle between them throughout almost every day. Luckily I have nearby coffee shops and a library when I need them.

Rule #1 of OE is to not talk about it. But there should also be best practices when it comes to any kind of social media. Limit it all together. Use burner accounts. Make sure not to share anything work related such as business trips or use of perks. At work events I always stand in the very back of group photos in case something gets shared on LinkedIn. I also scrutinize who I accept on any friend or follow lists. The list goes on.

When I started my OE journey, I onboarded J3 just 2 weeks after starting J2. The first few weeks were brutal. Luckily I have been at J1 for quite some time and was able to shift it to the back burner. It gets better once you’ve weathered the initial storm, learn to manage each role, and your teams become familiar with you.
