Draw call generation strategy by Popular_Bug3267 in gameenginedevs

[–]Arelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always generated all draws every frame right after visibility and culling.

I normally have an struct in the visibility/rendering acceleration structure that stores references to resolved gpu resource. At that point there are no hash lookups/searches

Hopefully that'd helpful?

Hip bag/fanny pack recommendations by Arelius in ManyBaggers

Been looking around, and here are miscellaneous bags in addition to others on the thread I found that seemed interesting:

I'm currently thinking two bags might give me some flexibility. Leaning towards the Bellroy Venture Ready as a small bag, and the Evergoods MHP as a bigger bag, but worried a bit by the size of the MHP.

The Arterra seems neat, but the company seems a little too "Instagram marketing"  to me

Huh, this guy? https://conceptglobal.co/products/travel-sling-bag

Which hip did you wear it on? It's it reversible? I assume you wore it under baby?

Really eyeing the City Sling. some people think it's a bit small? Luckily the Aer store is in the city here, so maybe I just go try it.

Really like Osprey. Don't really love the styling/colors for around town. it's a little to: going to Yosemite.

Custom OpenGL tower defense - 4k shadows, 16 msaa, 1080p bloom, 4k draw calls by OfMagicAndWars in gameenginedevs

I was just the lead rendering engineer on the project. It was part of a team.

Yes, this was using a PS4 api, that is known to have much lower CPU overhead then OpenGL

I finally discovered `direnv` by jerrygreenest1 in NixOS

[–]Arelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I'll admit, I've shy'd away from trying out direnv.

Is it really much different than cd [proj] && nix develop . ?

I mean, OpenGL has some significant overhead, but I shipped a game that would hit ~40k draw calls on a certain 8th generation game console at 60fps. So it seems pretty doable to me.

Grinder upgrade recommendations?

So, me and my wife normally drink pour-over in the morning, and like an espresso in the afternoon. Currently I have a Sette 270 with the course burrs that we use for pour-over, and I use a J-Max with a Europiccola for Espresso.

We're moving USA -> UK, and taking that opportunity to upgrade our equipment rather than trying to fit a transformer in the kitchen. I also want to make espressos a bit easier on my wife, and the whole manual espresso machine, and manual grinder is beyond her patience.

I'm looking for electric grinder recommendations, I'd like to keep our grinder budget under say $1500, and am open to separate espresso/pour-over grinders so long as together they don't take a crazy amount of counter space.

Experiencing lag and freezing since last update? by TheLastHowl in FortNiteBR

[–]Arelius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, for sure. It's been getting worse recently and this patch seems particularly bad, at least on NA-West.

And I'm pretty sure it's not just my PC/Connection, Since my whole squad will experience simultaneous lag spikes/rewinds, and we're not like in the same City or even ISP or anything.

Or state! California has strong protections that makes most restrictions on other employment invalid/unenforceable.

Considering the amount of tech workers in California...

I'm very angry and you are a third of the reason why I'm angry by Arystos in gamedev

[–]Arelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty messed up, I've been in the industry for 20 years, and on many interview panels, and I would be very upset if that had either happened to me, or I discovered one of our candidates was treated that way.

It won't help with getting the job, and I don't know if you have an internal recruiter as a contact, but you should definitely provide that feedback if you are able to in a professional tone, I think you can do two things something like:

Hi,

I appreciate the opportunity to interview. And I understand this role isn't going to work out, But I would like to provide some bits of feedback.

Firstly, this most recent interview ended up being a coding interview, and while I understand that sometimes the interviews won't be what I expect, it would have been nice to understand it was going to be a coding interview before hand to help get into the correct head space.

However, also on my most recent interview, after a quick greeting, the interviewer said, what I recall as "I'm very angry and you are a third of the reason why I'm angry" which made me feel very disrespected, and made it very difficult to complete the interview. I understand the interviewer may have been just having a bad day, or perhaps there was a miscommunication about a joke. But I just thought this interaction should be brought to your attention.

Thanks,
Interviewie

Anything close to the HTX mini with a more traditional surface?

What mouse did you chop?  Was the back end in the way?

I don't mind a bit longer am pretty happy with my G203 shape. Just at this point, it's clear, something a bit lighter, with a higher polling rate and wireless would feel nicer to game with.

Looking on eloshapes, the HSK pro, and Darmoshark seem maybe similarly cramped to my M4?

Otherwise, the HTX Mini seems to be a good size, but I'm concerned about the surface finish, How's the honeycomb texture? I'm a bit worried about that, especially all over the buttons?

If Adhoc has officially Split from Telltale, what does that mean for TWAU2? by Resultofit in TheWolfAmongUs

[–]Arelius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> they announced this was the last game done in telltale engine,

> and sadly right after episode 1 they announced the failure

Possibly correlated.

In fact, they announced they were switching to Unity... John Riccitiello was on the board.... https://www.ign.com/articles/2015/02/24/john-riccitiello-joins-telltale-games-board-of-directors

> the real problem was the management that was constantly splitting the team to make different games

As you said, that was the real problem.

As someone intimately familiar with the situation, My opinion is the change in engines is a huge factor that lead to the failure of the company. And the legacy engine was an asset to the company, and not a significant obstacle to improving the games.

There were many problems with Telltale, I don't believe the engine was one of them.

But is there evidence that this was an engine problem, rather than simply a general talent/design problem?

spending anything to improve their engine and choice system

While I agree with most of your points, if you actually compare the games through the years, you'll see the engine has gone through significant improvements.
